Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

JWillowUpdate on the Outdated

Since my last entry on this goal (Dec 2013) I’ve been a bit tardy with keeping the tally of 2nd-hand sales up to date.

The task of de-cluttering my mind through clearing space of ‘stuff’ has slowed down a lot lately and for whatever reasons, my usual enthusiasm for selling online and gathering for charity drops has waned immensely this year?

In June, D & I loaded up the car and had a stall at a Saturday Morning Car Boot Sale at a local church yard. Glad of the gorgeous sunny day it turned out to be but sad that we came home with as much as we took, sales amounted to just $18.00. Never mind, it spurred us on to drive past the charity shop on the way home and unload. That felt good.

Now that the new kitchen is about to be installed, I’m working on another gathering of goods to sell/donate. And, I’ve just listed a few things on gumtree today too.

I don’t see this goal ever having an ‘end date’ as such; buying, selling and giving things away is a past-time I inherited from my Grandmother and one I (usually) thrive on and enjoy.

Marking this goal as done is now a par for the course with the coming closure of 43T.

JWillowCashing in on things

As I haven’t been working the past 4 months I’ve taken every opportunity to have a good look at the things D & I really don’t need or ever use!

After a few weeks of posting Ads and keeping them updated on Gumtree, I’ve managed to sell:

*a Mattress that was just sitting in storage ($185.00)
*a handbag & wallet I bought ages ago and never used ($50.00)
*a 1yr old Microwave Oven which we never used ($65.00)
*a new Coffee Plunger that we never used ($10.00)

This extra cash has paid necessary bills so I’m super glad for the sales, especially at this time of year. :-) 12 months ago

JWillowPump it up!

Sold the swimming pool Pump & Cartridge along with a leaf scooper, brush and some pool hosing yesterday. Got $100 for the lot which was great!

Now…what else have I got to get rid of? 13 months ago

JWillowSwimming Sales

Yesterday afternoon I sold Mum & Dad’s old Pool Chlorinator & Timer -for $70.00!

I’ve got the old Pump, Pool Hoses and Leaf Catcher on the net for sale too so hopefully they’ll go just as quickly. 13 months ago

JWillowKing Single

On Wednesday night at approx. 5pm I put an ad on gumtree to sell the King Single mattress and bed frame that we have stored at my parent’s house.

Within 15mins I had 3 callers interested.

At 8.30pm it was sold! :-) 13 months ago

JWillowSeptember Sales

At the beginning of the month, I sold the spare Queen Size Bed & lovely bed head/end plus a matching 3Drawer bedside table for a total of $180.00.

And last week I sold 2 bags of Pool Salt which my parents no longer need for $10.00 14 months ago

JWillowSaturday's Success!

A lady just came around to purchase something I had posted for sale on the internet @ $20.00.

Whilst she was here, she decided to look at other items I have for sale, and she parted with another $60.00!

$80.00 in my pocket on a sunny Saturday afternoon is grand! :-D 17 months ago

JWillowBack on the Net!

Another clean-out at home has just seen another 8 items listed on the internet to sell.

Fingers crossed they’re a quick sale! 17 months ago

JWillowSales Up!

Over the past month, we have sold:

~ D’s brothers car – $2500
~ some tupperware – $25
~ pair of shoes – $10

We were especially surprised to sell the car so quickly but were grateful to have that cash to pay for some unexpected bills that came in. 21 months ago

D has some virtually unworn jeans in the closet which he’s not likely to ever wear so we decided to put them on gumtree for sale and within 20mins I got a call from a guy interstate wanting the Calvin Klein jeans. He sent me monies via Paypal including postage & within another half hour, I’d posted them.

KerChing! :-D

2 prs of Armani denim jeans still for sale! 22 months ago

JWillowAnd it's gone!

Sold a really nice Freedom Furniture Coat Stand/Hat Rack last weekend. Another $50 bucks in the travel piggy. 23 months ago

JWillowMore things to Sell!

There’s a never-ending array of things to get rid of here. Things we don’t want but things we don’t want to just ‘give away’ either.

So, a new list of items “For Sale” has emerged. It took me 2 hours to take photos and list everything on the internet to sell over the weekend.

We even listed D’s brother’s car for sale!

Fingers crossed we get some bites and some serious buyers. 23 months ago

JWillowRed Chairs

Well, my beloved retro red chairs have left the building!

5 years ago I picked up a couple of very groovy armchairs upholstered in bright red fabric at a Garage Sale. I fell in love with them instantly and scored a deal, buying them for just $80 the pair!

On Wednesday night, I sold them to a lady for $120 the pair.

Sad to see them go but we had to make room for the new sofa! :-) 23 months ago

JWillowIt all adds up!

Got a call from a guy this afternoon about a pair of specialist men’s outdoor shoes D got me to list for sale on gumtree for him.

He said his wife would be round to get them on his behalf.

She turned up and said they’d be way too small for her husband BUT….I sold her a pair of shoes I had for sale instead!!! :-D

Another $20 in the kitty. 2 years ago

JWillowAnother Lens

We’ve had an Olympus digital lens on the internet for sale for about 4months now and hardly a bite of interest. In the past 2wks though, several people have contacted us making ridiculous offers!

Then, on Monday night an elderly man who happens to live just around the corner made contact and came to buy it immediately – no negotiation. Happy to pay the sale price – $150.00 cash. Yay! 2 years ago

JWillowPopular items

If we had another dozen camera lenses, we’d be well on our way to a healthy bank account.

We listed a Canon Digital Lens on the internet to sell and within an hour, we had over 57hits on it plus 14 people wanting to buy it!

To be fair, we sold it to the first person who ‘phoned’ us and offered to transfer the money to our account if we shipped it registered post. $220 in the bank and it was a done deal! 2 years ago

JWillowKer-Ching! Ker-Ching!

The travel savings have increased yet again with 4 sales being made from our internet ads over the past week:

- 1 dinnerset (sold for $35 just this morning!)
- 1 pr of hiking pants (sold for $35)
- 2 prs of fishing waders (sold for $70)

Might need to bank some of this excess cash now; just in case of that temptation to spend! 2 years ago

JWillowSale Time!

Almost every day this week, we’ve sold something – really bizarre as it happens whenever I begin to think the ads aren’t working.

At lunchtime today, D met with a guy in the carpark at his workplace to sell him some fishing gear.(that’s another $65 in the travel kitty). 2 years ago

JWillowA Quick Bargain Sale

No sooner had I put the ad on gumtree late Sunday afternoon, I got a call from a lady wanting to come round straight away….she turned up just 10mins later, cash ready in hand and went away with a Minolta Zoom Lens in A1 condition, for just $25! 2 years ago

JWillowLate night sale

An unexpected text message came through on Tuesday night, quite late – a young guy expressing interest in the old compact cd/radio/cassette player.

I debated whether to call him so late (9pm) but did, and he was in his car and at the door within 20mins. Not only did he buy the system, he also bought a set of shot glasses we had up for sale too! :-) 2 years ago

JWillowWash - out

This morning, we sold the washing machine!

A lovely young girl & her father came to look & happily took it away with them. Another $250 in the travel kitty. :-) 2 years ago

JWillowAnother Sale!

We finally sold the sofas D has had in storage for the past 6mths.

A couple of Uni students turned up with a van and paid $250 for the 2 Seater + 3 Seater leather sofas. We were so happy to see them go.

Now we can go sofa shopping for something new & comfortable! :-) 2 years ago

JWillowEarly Rise for Market Day

Call me crazy? Yep!

A spur of the moment decision on Saturday afternoon saw me doing my best sales pitch to convince D that if he got up with me at 3.30am on Sunday morning to have a market stall, he wouldn’t regret it!!!

He agreed. He’s the crazy one! :-)

We had a great day although freezing cold (1 degree at 4am) and we managed to sell all the stuff we hoped not to bring home whilst cashing up to $235 in the kitty, YAY! 2 years ago

JWillowMore to sell

Starting to feel like I’ve got 2nd-hand furniture business going these days, D & I moved all the furniture he had in storage on the Gold Coast to my parent’s garage/basement here in Brisbane last weekend. Now we have loads more than ever to sell:

  • fridge – SOLD this morning :-)
  • washing machine
  • 2seater + 3seater leather sofas
  • coffee table
  • Queen Size Bed frame & Mattress
  • King Single Bed frame & Mattress
  • Beside drawers
  • 16pc Dinner Set
  • Toaster
  • Printer

Everything is less than 2yrs old so we should be able to sell these things quite quickly. Fingers crossed! 2 years ago

There’s still so much to sort through.

Since D & I moved in together I’m seeing ‘double’; in some cases triple of almost everything!

2 Hat stands, 2 sofas, 3 kettles, 4 fruit bowls, 3 sets of wine glasses, 2 stereo systems, 3 sets of saucepans, 3 Dinner Sets, 2 washing machines, 2 fridges, CDs, Linen etc…

We’ve at least gotten to the point of knowing what we want and don’t want but these larger items are harder to sell, especially when you know how much you paid for them.

Thinking to have a Garage Sale next weekend?

In the meantime I’ll be placing some classifieds on
& keeping my fingers crossed for some sales. 2 years ago

JWillowSunday Market - 6th May

Finally, with a clear & sunny weekend I packed up Betty Barina with trash & treasure and made the effort to get up at 4am on Sunday morning and head to the markets.

Arriving there at 4.45am there was a queue of cars vying for a stall. I was lucky, being allocated a great spot close to the entrance.

Despite a chilly air to start, the day warmed up to a beautiful 24degrees & I got to meet & see some really interesting people. I also sold loads of stuff (I didn’t have to take home, YAY!)and went home at 12noon with $125 in my pocket that I didn’t have at 4am! :-D 2 years ago

JWillow2 more sales!

It astounds me that people will go to so much trouble to buy small things from the internet!

Sold this morning:

- 1 pr Black Evening Shoes $25
- 1 Electric Kettle (new) $8 EDIT: not sold 2 years ago

JWillow1 sale Sunday

Today I sold a photographer’s monopod for $10, to a guy who called in response to one of my online ads.

That’s the only sale I got all weekend. I had hoped to get to the markets to have a stall but it has been raining non-stop since Friday night and it would have been pointless.

Fingers crossed for a drier Sunday next weekend and maybe a few small sales during the week. 2 years ago
