I’ve complete my first sculpture. I ama quite happy with it. It would be good as a monumental size though that would be a lot more work and expensive so probably not going to do it.

ideally it would be good doubled and set up as gates to my driveway. I might try to add pictures later. 12 months ago

I’ve done two weeks of teh sculpture class now. Its carving oriented working with hebel, clay or wood.

I’m owrking on something in hebel. I felt quite awful about the class until i got into the groove of a sculpture that looks like it will work out last night. So now i’m feeling more motivated and less heavy.

I took along some wood and a peice of coral to feel what it would be like to carve that. The coral is already pretty so doesn’t need much doing to it but it was good for me to feel how it felt. I used a rasp.

for the hebel which is aerated cement, i use a saw and raspy gouging tools and a chisel. Its qutie pleasant to work with though you must cover your face and pay attention to the dust because its bad for the lungs.

I had a scrape on a piece of driftwood. That felt ok too. I’ve got an idea to work using driftwood but it will need a metal amature.

Most of the people in the class are working on clay at this point. I didn’t want to do it becuase i thought it would mean spending lots of money on tools. I will probably come around to it later one.

But ultimately, it would be much better if i could find a way of working that relied mainly on recycled materials because buying new materiasl is neither great for the environment or my budget. 13 months ago

This goal – start work on an original sculpture in 2010 – is completed but rather than passing it on, i’m changing the title to update it.

do a little every day to get started and
down the track a little every week.

I need to make a serious start on this project otherwise it won’t happen. Luckily today we didn’t know the recycling bin was going out so i have still got all my tin cans.

As pointed out to me they maynot be the best core for my sculpture because they will rot out but at this point i haven’t got anything else to use.

Show piece
Today while driving, and thinking about my sculptures. i thought i could advertise my work by featuring it on the corner of our block. I wouldn’t put my first one there but I can do furture ones. I was thinking of making it a veritable sculpture feature showroom down there even. i really must get onto making these things. Saving my tin cans and experimenting.

Rather htan putting a whole lot down there i cna have a changing exhibition.

idea
Last night it occured to me that my experiments with ferrocement can be used in my garden sculpture.

For instance one experiment that i need to make first up is a plank. I figure i can make planks of a certain size that will be good for my dome seating sculpture.

This is very exciting to know that i won’t have to just throw away my experiments and waste money. Though it means i need to make sure my experiments are as beautiful as the finished works need to be for the house.

It also occurs to me that instead of flag stones i could make a plank floor for my outdoor dining area. this particular job would require long planks.

I still haven’t found the right steel material for making the FC yet. I need to get on to this.

or earlier
I have an idea in mind. It involves learning how to work with concrete. It should not be too expensive. It has a recycling element to it and will be a great feature in our garden.

I can use this work for promotion to get commissions, enter in art competitions and so on.

It may not be easy to establish during the wet season although i may be able to do the first part of it, short of the cement works during the wet season. But first I have to get all my planting done as that is critical.

I wont be able to finish it until next dry season I think.
