How to learn basic Italian
How I did it: Acquired very basic traveling knowledge for a trip to Venice, Florence, and points in between. My background in French and Spanish made it pretty easy to pick up the basics and get around. Used my knowledge of other romance languages and a few podcasts.

I’ve been working haphazardly at this for a couple of months, and next week I leave for Florence and Venice. We’ll see then if I actually know anything.

So the Rome trip is off, but we are still going somewhere in Europe. It may be Venice and Greece, in which case the Italian will still come in handy, but it may be Paris and the Normandy region, in which case I should wait and just brush up on the French instead. There is also the option of a Meditteranean cruise that hits 6 cities in 7 days, in which case I’ll just smile a lot and try to be polite. I want to have the decision pinned down by next week so that I know what to do with this goal.

I’ve started going over the phrases in the bbc online Italian class, and my brain keeps wanting to go to French (I took a few years of it in high school.) I keep wanting to say “s’il vous plait” instead of “per favore”. I wish I had started learning this when I was 4 years old. Ah, well, we do what we can. I’ve only been working on it for two days, so I’ll give it some time.

I’m going to Rome in June, so I thought it would only be sensible to learn a little of the Italian language. There are a couple of websites with free resources, so I’ve signed up for a weekly email 12 week course from the BBC. We’ll see how it goes.

Now I need to come up with a coherent strategy to make it stick long term, practice makes perfect I suppose.
I really don’t think I could do this on pure memory alone, need to articulate what I’m learning constantly or I just don’t recall it 3 days later – I suppose I have a a pragmatic learning style.
Also I see a strong knowledge of the over all rules and structure of the language would benefit this learning process – the devil is in the details! (which I revel in! – a little to much perhaps)
