I spent three days in a Russian jail cell on the border at Zabaikalsk.
For some reason, the border guards thought that my passport was an internal travel document. (Admittedly my passport was an older version, and looked different to the other Kiwis on the train – but they must have seen it before…perhaps they’d been watching too much sesame street?)
Anyway, three days of being locked up (with brief excursions to bars/restaurants so I could eat and drink) they decided to let me continue my travels. And it actually made for the best travelling experience.
My hilight was the stunning female guard who came and asked me questions on the first day. I was disappointed the following two days when she was replaced by two blokes.
