"I'm sure this class would be much more fun if I had even the slightest amount of grace or rhythm, but it was still an interesting experience."
How I did it: I started researching belly dancing classes in my area, and just picked one that had great reviews and reasonably affordable prices. In all reality, I never thought of taking a belly dancing class before, and one day a friend of mine mentioned that she would be interested in taking it with me. So, I showed up for the introductory course at Fat Chance Belly Dance which has a great reputation. I learned a few hand moves and bumps and learned that my hips don't move as much as I thought they would.
All in all, the class was fun for a first time experience. If I hadn't had so much on my plate already, I may have stuck with it to improve my skills. Everyone there was friendly.
Lessons & tips: Don't worry, everyone is learning, so just let loose and try not to focus too hard on what you think you might be doing incorrectly. It takes some dedication and practice to get this down, but everyone seems to have a good time doing it.

You won't need the zils or outfits right away. Just showing up in comfortable workout clothes or even a long loose skirt should work for the first few lessons.
