I have this on my mind and it appears a few of my relatives also feel the same. I would love to spend a number of months there and then take a Spanish course. Perhaps that is the reason why I am now unemployed—so that I may make this happen.
How to visit Colombia
How I did it: I went with my Mother and younger cousin for 6 weeks. We stayed in my Uncle's vacation apartment in Sabaneta. I must say this trip will be one of my greatest memories. I saw so many new things, and really got to think about life and how great it is.
Lessons & tips: Take it for what it's worth.

I leave to Colombia, and I arrive July 13th. So I’ll be gone a month and a half, it seems long for me to be in another country, but I’ll be with family so hopefully it goes smoothly. I’m actually very excited to go and explore where my Mother’s side of the family is from.
i want to go againnn i havent been there in 7 years =( and i have to wait till i get my canadian citysenship =’(
not as bad as you may think, at least in the main cities. I decided to go three days before I left. Just hopped on a plane and went for it. If it’s your first time take the chivas (night and day) the night chivas (they’re the tour busses) are awesome. They give you all free rum and coke, take you to local night spots, and at the end take you to a club on the beach with more free rum, all with your own band on the back of the open bus!
Make sure to save a day for swimming in mud volcanoes and another day in the Rosary Islands!
Oh yeah, check out Cafe del Mar- a bar/lounge on the roof of an old castle.
I want to be a person who does what she says. I have wanted to visit this country for too long. It is my mother’s homeland and I desperately want to see it.
Luckily, lately in conjunction with some of my volunteer work and photography it has been mentioned. Perhaps this is a little clue that it is in my near future. If not, then I’m thinking about this for February08.
Hide it and say your canadian. It’s worth it, it is part of the adventure.
People are very friendly. Countryside is breathtaking.
Unfortunately you have to check for guerilla activity in the countryside, a drive to the coast can turn into quite an adventure; we had to walk after our car was “appropriated” by not-so-friendly folks with machine guns.
I hadn’t been back in 30 years…was great to re-connect with so many cousins, uncles, aunts etc. They were very patient with my very pathetic Spanish.
