Ideal is hard to measure but I’m happy enough with the current one.

What I’m using now is quite nice. It’s a dvorak with ä and ö, and on top of that the caps lock key is now a second backspace.
I just switched to a modified dvorak. It’ll take me some time to get back to a tolerable typing speed.
http://dvorak.nl/learn.plp has a Dvorak tutorial that does not require a Dvorak keyboard.
Qwerty is slow and unbalanced (left hand does most of the work). It works especially badly in Finnish. Dvorak does not have the Finnish ä and ö at all. DAS layout ( see http://www.students.tut.fi/~seres/DAS_en.html ) is designed for Finnish but has punctuation located as badly as in qwerty.
I haven’t yet take Dvorak or DAS on an actual spin, though.
There is also Svdvorak ( http://wiki.fz.se/Svdvorak ), which looks nice apart from the location of the brackets, but for those could be switched with å for Finnish/English use.
