Short stories again. Why do I always get short stories?? 7 years ago
I missed reading Neil Gaiman. I don’t know why I hadn’t read AG before now, but I am a better person for having done so.
It encouraged me to make a list of all the gods I knew by heart, which is considerable, in my journal. I plan on adding to the list as I learn about more Gods. As I was making the list though, I was asking my husband & my sister’s bf to help, and they were calling out things like “burt reynolds” and “bill clinton” which made the book that more impressive to me. 7 years ago
A collection of short stories that touch on all of Asimov’s major themes… space, computers, and stuff. I didn’t realize, and think it is awesome that I have a first printing of this book – it just wouldn’t be right to read this book on paper that wasn’t yellowing.
I had only read one of the stories, “Jokester”, prior to picking up the book. Unfortunately (for me), “Jokester” is probably the best story in the series, and one of the only ones I can remember the name of. By and large, I found the book amusing and easy to read. The quotes about computers make me laugh. 7 years ago
Welcome back to the Galaxy, Tara. It’s been a long time.
I don’t know why I always feel slightly intimidated by Asimov, he presents a really easy read.
This particular book won the Hugo, good for it. Although I don’t think that it should necessarily stand alone, it works okay without knowing all the other Foundation books. Which is really good, since I read those years ago and kind of forgot what had happened. Since Asimov took so long to get back to writing about the Foundations, I thought I could take a similar hiatus in reading them. I particularly like how he revisits the history without (1) doing it all in the first chapter or (2) going at lenght about it where you feel like you have to skim through all the shit you have already read.
The plot is okay. I don’t think that Gaia was as interesting as it could be. It was just kind of repetitive – “I am Gaia, I am Gaia, blah.” I liked it better when the Second Foundationers where the guys I rooted for… and this book makes it feel like you would be stupid to root for only mentalic powers…
Not that I don’t like collective consciousness as an idea, I just think other people described it better/more interestingly.
Onwards to my new Asimov read – Earth is Room Enough. 7 years ago
Really basic rags-to-riches story.
I didn’t particularly like Thorby (or whatever you want to call him as his name changes 15 times in the course of the book), the main character, because he was so easily swayed into the new “adventures.” He started as a scrappy, fast running, hard to catch boy. How did that get removed so thoroughly?
But I love reading Heinlein. It just makes the world disappear and float away. He can write a story with a crappy main character that I don’t particularly like better than everyone else that I read. 7 years ago
