I decided to loc my hair July 6th 2008 for various reasons I live in the pacific northwest and having natural straight here was a no no because as soon as I spent my $65.00 on my bi weekly press and flat iron as soon as I left the shop my hair puffed out like a 8 inch afro.So I said no more money down the drain I was going to do something that was cost affective and rather stylish so I locked my hair up.It took a couple of hours but it was well worth it.I sectioned my hair into small boxes and used bee’s wax to start each loc.Starting at the root working down to the tips. Its a very long process will make your arms tired but as long as you have a snack and a t.v,ipod mp3 player to keep your focused on your hair you will be fine lol.To be honest the first year your hair is in a very weird state its not locked totally but not straight/curly frizzy whatever your hair was like prior to dreading it.So when you shampoo your locks put a stocking cap on to help prevent unraveling.Using small clips to keep your parts and dreads seperate help while twisting your locs(the method used to maintain your hair)Using quality products also play a factor in having nice dreads unscented shampoo’s work best because I use lightly scented hair products such as bee’s wax rarely if my hair is looking dull and dry or I use jamican mango lime products which are great to help you maintain your hair daily such as their loc a shine their hair incence and firm twisting wax.

How I did it: I used a very fine tooth comb to brush my hair backwards. Next, I would kind of roll the knot until it got longer. I would just keep repeating this, rubbing beeswax on each dread. Quite time consuming, but worth it. Read how I did it…

How I did it: I have a friend who makes dreads and had him do it. It hurt like hell!! And crocheting all the time is tiresome. But im so happy with it:) Though its still fresh and really looks like it, im very happy to have them made:)EDIT:However, i see something changing. There has been more to do with my dreads during a month than with all my hairstyles in my life. Always crocheting- thats the key to nice dreads. And regular washing. My boyfriend had dreads for a few months about two and a half years ago. We used the DreadHeadHQ kit, until finally they drove him absolutely nuts and he cut off all of his long beautiful hair and looked like a douche bag for a year while it grew back.
I’ve been planning to get dreadies of my since he had his, but thanks to a few rash decisions and terrible gaffes regarding my hair, it never worked out.
But we visited the Rainbow Gathering in February, and it completely inspired us. Sam started bathing even less then ever before, leading to dreads for him regardless of his wishes about it. But he’s started working on them and they look very nice and he loves them this time around. His head is about half backcombed and half natural and I’m really interested in how it will come out. The backcombed ones are really nice, knotty and healthy so far.
As for me, I finally took the plunge after taking a shower and then tripping too hard to comb my hair out. It was a tangled mess by the next morning and I just took that as a sign. My hair is fairly straight, so I’m mostly backcombing, but I think I might do a couple natural dreads if they feel like that’s what they want to do.
I’ve basically just been slowly grabbing chunks of hair that seem like they love each other and backcombing them, working from front to back. It’s been 18 days and have a little over half my head done. Right now I can only do as many as I can get other people to section off for me, because I can’t see the back of my head.
7 months so far… it seems they’ve shrunk like cray-zay since my trip to mexico. methinks it’s because of the uber salty water. anyways, im not sure how much longer i’ll last with these things.. i hate to admit it, but i think i miss being vain and girly.

Till I have hair again. : )
Talking about hair, it’s growing back in nicely and because it’s cold it’s growing back quite fast. It’s so super soft that myself, my husband, and my little ones that I teach can’t stop rubbing it. : ) One little girl yesterday called me “Boy Miss Ellen” because I “had no girl hair” I kinda like that I’m helping them realize at this young age that life doesn’t not fill comfortably into stereotypes.
Ever since I went to Venice Beach, I have wanted dreadlocks. I don’t think I will ever actually get them, because I could not deal with having no hair when it’s time to cut them off, but it would be nice. I just want to be a hippie.
you gotta be patient for the pay off. I looked funny for a good 6 months. But I kept them for 6 years and still miss them today.
your hair gets stinky and itchy, which makes your pillow stinky. I couldn’t get a job, that sucked….
some people just don’t look right with them.
when i didn’t want them anymore i shaved my head and looked awful!
