go deer hunting

Got my rifle (Remington 700 in .270 Winchester with a Nikon 3-9x scope), a tree stand, and still nothing this year. Another summer to wait…

Finally got around to the fun part of hunting deer. Eating deer!
Ordered a yearling from a farm outside of town and split it with a friend. Got 35 lbs of nice fallow deer. Cooked two steaks up tonight. Tender lean and fantastic. Found out that crossbow hunting is a definite possibility. Much less paperwork required than with firearms registration and ownership.

Talking with someone today at a client sight that I’ve become friendly with in the past month. I may have the chance to get out for this year’s deer season after all.

Apparently, I’ll have to look into getting all the right permits and such to legally carry a gun even on a weekend trip.

Here’s hoping that this year’s Xmas roast comes from my own freezer!

Had an old high school friend in town this weekend. He’s moved up to gods country and there’s a standing invitation to head up for a deer hunt when the time permits.

This is something I have never done but as a chef and someone who loves to cook with venison I would enjoy the opportunity not only to have the privilige of taking a deer from the wild but most likely a new found respect for where my food comes from.

It’s great, even if you don’t get anything.
