How to adopt pet rats
How I did it: I thought about it for a long time, researching their diet, health, everything that they'd need to be healthy and happy. This was largely from a website called Fancy-Rats.co.uk, which is a brilliant source of information and has an adoption forum too. When I'd finally decided it was what I wanted to do, I waited until there were three male rats who needed a home, and I put my name forward. I picked them up from London and the rest is history!
Lessons & tips: Make sure you know what you're getting into, research thoroughly and don't get pets if you like having a pristine house - they do chew things and get messy when they want to!
Rats are sociable, fun creatures, so make sure you have two or more. Don't go to a pet shop, because they are unlikely to give you correct information, and adopt or rescue rats if you can.

Yes, they are as adorable as their photos, and very sweet. We have been playing for the last few hours and now they are curled up against one another having a nap. They are so tiny that they squeezed right through the roomy cage, so we had to get an aquarium as a temporary home until they are a little bigger. They’re very active, great climbers.
I’m picking them up for sure Friday. Yay! Their names are Alvin and Boris (Boris pictured here.) I actually like those names, but maybe we should pick our own names for them, as a family. It seems kind of selfish to change their names, though. Of course, they may not give a rat’s ass. WAHAHA! Sorry, that was bad.
Yay, I’m so excited! I found a breeder in Tampa and he has a pair of month-old little brothers. A Russian Blue Point Himalayan and a Russian Silver Dumbo, of which I have only a basic idea what that means. (I don’t really care what they look like; I just want some sweet little pets, and he says one has a good temperament and the other excellent.) The funny thing is, these rats have more of a documented pedigree than I do. I will post photos soon (edit: I have photos now – here’s one of them and there are some more in the comments); I think I will be picking them up on Friday. I have been looking online for a suitable habitat. I have something now but I want a big palace. A rat romper room! I can’t wait to start making cool toys for them. I’ll have to ask Ember and Imoeris for any tips they can give me. It has been a long time since I had a pet rat.
They are a rescue and also a breedery, and they seem really dedicated to the animals’ welfare. I have to fill out a page-long application to adopt from them. They want to know what I will feed them, what kind of bedding I will use, how much space and what kind of habitat they will have, whether they will have a companion, how much time they will get to spend out of cage, etc. I like that. It shows they take good care of them and are loving, ethical people. Even small animals have value! I helped my little girl rescue a bug out of her wading pool yesterday. She really dug that.
Edit: I changed my mind on this one. It found something closer to home, and I have also since read that it is not good to operate both a breedery and a rescue because of the possibility of introducing disease into the breeding colony.
