I tried a lot of mind mapping software. In Wikipedia is a very good overview of all kinds.
For free software FreeMind seems to be the reference, a good software with all im- and exports, but no handling of lots of topics by cut and paste and no “properties”.
For buying, MindManager pro seems to be the reference. It has a lot of features. But it’s user interface is not windows – conform, so I don’t like it.
For me I prefer XMIND, its very easy to use and powerful. It has cut and paste, powerful printing and you can associate topics. But has not the import I searched (vers. 2.0.2), only FreeMind and MindManager file type. So I did not find a way to export, handle my data with other programs, and reimport them. Also I didn’t find a way to print drill down maps. But besides this, for me it’s the best.
I used it extensively in my job, it’s an product r&d job, so I have to brainstorm a lot. Using FreeMind is very useful, it’s a free tool and enable you to use mind mapping easily, no hassle of writing lines/drawing pictures.
If you’re willing to pay and need to brainstorm collectively, i’ve ever tried the MindMeister, and find it quite useful. But I tried that only during the trial period, and stop afterwards.

I think I gave this too much credit. It wasn’t that hard to learn and I think it’s really helped my joke writing efficiency.
but I have mastered the basics and it is surprisingly easy. I am now using it for client notes and several of them want a copy in that form rather than narrative. It’s working well for my goals too, the ability to add in pictures makes it so exciting plus I can attach other files as necessary when i am using the computer program I got.
Although I think that this is a skill you need to develop and practice I feel that I can tick this as done because I have worked out to do it well.
Have been working on my skills both freehand and on PC. It’s been good because some of my clients have been really positive about me recording meeting notes in this format. Another week and I can mark this one done!
I’m trying to expand my ability to process information and manage multiple tasks. Mind Mapping looks like the answer and I just downloaded a great application to help me do it. Put it this way, it kept me off 43 things for 2 hours, got to be addictive!
