try dumpster diving at least once

We have found : an ananas, sausages, salad (with carrits and corn) , yaourts, radis ,strawberries, and one or two empty bottle that if you retrive it to the shop you get 0,50 € .

And also a trash bag who really smelled like dead-old-fish !!!
But it was not really dumpster “diving” , the dumpsters are to small to jump into them.

its one of those things that everyone should just try…if you’re going eewww gross it will expand your horizons!

I don’t know if it technically counts as dumpster diving as the bin bags were out on the kerb (and anyway, I much prefer the terms skipping or tatting, which sound rather delightful in a Glaswegian accent) but I pedalled away with six perfectly good oranges. :)

Well, I haven’t actually gone dumpster diving all on my own. My friend’s landlord was a jerk and threw all their stuff in the dumpster while they were moving into their new apartment. So we had to jump in and retrieve all of their stuff. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, or as bad as it sounds.

I would, however love to try again, but without the goal of saving my friends stuff. After all, they say,”One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Fun times.

I’ve gotten some high quality stuff that was saved from the dump. I would say thousands of dollars worth of truly great things that would’ve been landfill.

Trying out this “freecycle” thing now, and saving some trouble. Still keeping an eye on the curb for trash day, however.

I wish there was an option for “ambivalent.” I didn’t find anything, but it was a learning experience. #1 Don’t go to the Sav-a-Lot early on Saturday morning (they have a big scary delivery truck) #2 A box cutter is very useful for cutting open plastic bags. I’m going to try again.

My goal is to find something edible in a dumpster and, well, eat it. :) Even if it’s just a bannana or something. (I’m not sure WHY this is my goal, it just seems like a good idea.) Problem is the local grocery store (which is actually a ‘superstore’ and probably throws away a ton of stuff every night) uses trash compactors rather than dumpsters. Back to the drawing board… I might try the sunrise center next, they have one of those wallmarts that sells groceries so there’s probably something there.

I love dumpster diving and actively practice it. It really is a form of treasure hunting, and I’ve found a lot of treasure.

I’m not talking just dumpsters, but all forms of garbage diving. I’ve stopped in front of houses on trash collection days. I’ve rooted around dump grounds looking for copper and aluminum salvage. I even scrounge floral house dumpsters for ribbon. I have a lifetime supply of Xmas ribbon.

I don’t “dive” slaughterhouse bins, but that’s about it.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Before and during college I would always drive around town to see if people had couches or what not on their lawns. I was looking for a Futon at the time.

I found a wooden frame futon in fairly decent shape and later bought a mattress for it at the futon shop. I saved $200 just on the frame alone. And then used that $200 for the mattress. But I was happy.

this is really fun! we do it during the summer. some of the stuff people throw away is ridiculous!
