On the first and second of November it is believed that the souls of the dead return to earth, so families take time to recognize and honor those who have died. This can be as simple as lighting a candle next to a photograph, or making an elaborate ofrenda.
My family has always celebrated this day, and the past few years we have had friends (who’ve never heard of Dia de los Muertos) join us. At first I think they thought we were a little morbid by having skulls and candles everywhere, but after awhile they got into the spirit of it and now it’s become a tradition with their families as well.
