Out of season, my first carved pumpkin  — 5 months ago

    Worth doing!

Three months after the Halloween celebrations, I finally come around to carve my very first pumpkin ever in my life! So I might be late with the festivity, but this was quite entertaining and am very proud of my first project —especially since I grew its parent plant from seed :)

An eclipse of the Moon and the Sun proved more than appropriate for my first carving. This was a good-feeling-all-around project and will definitely be a repeat every October —instead of on Groundhog Day/Día de la Candelaria :P

Voilà my crop of pumpkins for the 2007 gardening season. I’m already late for Halloween, but I was late on planting them; I had a late harvest. Of 11 pumpkin plants, this season yielded only one and a half plus a quarter green one not fully matured. Yet Ru’s project inspired me to try and carve this little one as well.

After hitting store after store and finding not one single pumpkin (not even a crummy one), we had given up on carving anything for Halloween this year.

How great is Daddy? It may not be a pumpkin, but it certainly is festive.

Also made this recipe and it’s sooooo tasty.

    Pumpkin soup

    Ideal for Halloween or Thanksgiving.
Nice and warming with a touch of curry spice.
If prepared with vegetable stock it will be Suitable for Vegetarian

2 pounds ( 900g ) of pumpkin flesh, cut into cubes
    1 large onion, chopped
1 large potato, peeled and cubed
    1-2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 flat teaspoon of curry powder, mild or medium strength
    1 bay leaf
    salt and freshly ground pepper
3-4 cups chicken or vegetable stock
    1 tablespoon sunflower oil

    1. boil the pumpkin cubes and the bay leaf in some water until nearly tender
    2. sweat the chopped onion in the oil until transparent
    3. add the crushed garlic, trying not to burn it
    4. mix in the curry spice and stir
    5. pour the cooked pumpkin into the mixture
    6. add potato cubes, stock and salt and pepper, simmer until cooked
    7. blend to a creamy consistency
    8. serve with crusty rolls, delicious.
A very productive day as I got my Apfelwein bottled also :-)

I did it! The scooping out bit was harder than i thought but i’m glad i did it. The pumpkin was a centrepiece at our halloween tea party.

was my childhood deprived, or what?

    anyway,
nadia took me to the pumpkin
    patch on tuesday.

    i found the perfect pumpkin
    and carved the typical grinning,
    3-toothed, triangle-eyed pumpkin.

    i named him ichabod.
    i thought it was appropriate.
