So don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truely want to become. Everything eles is secondary…Steve Jobs. 3 months ago
We`re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we`re not alone – Orson Wells
I found this quote after hearing it paraphrased in a movie called The Art of Getting By in which the kid who is being all existential angsty says he has read a quote once that “we are born alone, we die alone and everything else is an illusion” and uses it as justification for a slacker lifestyle of underachieving.
I like Wells’ quote itself better, its more like Erich Fromm’s quote about love being the only real sane solution to the dilemma posed by existence. 3 months ago

“Freedom is not a constant attribute which we either “have” or “have not.” In fact, there is no such thing as “freedom” except as a word and an abstract concept. There is only one reality: the act of freeing ourselves in the process of making choices. In this process the degree of our capacity to make choices varies with each act, with our practice of life.”
― Erich Fromm, El Corazon del Hombre: Su Potencia Para el Bien y Para el Mal 4 months ago
“If other people do not understand our behavior—so what? Their request that we must only do what they understand is an attempt to dictate to us. If this is being “asocial” or “irrational” in their eyes, so be it. Mostly they resent our freedom and our courage to be ourselves. We owe nobody an explanation or an accounting, as long as our acts do not hurt or infringe on them. How many lives have been ruined by this need to “explain,” which usually implies that the explanation be “understood,” i.e. approved. Let your deeds be judged, and from your deeds, your real intentions, but know that a free person owes an explanation only to himself—to his reason and his conscience—and to the few who may have a justified claim for explanation.”
― Erich Fromm, The Art of Being 4 months ago
“A person who has not been completely alienated, who has remained sensitive and able to feel, who has not lost the sense of dignity, who is not yet “for sale”, who can still suffer over the suffering of others, who has not acquired fully the having mode of existence – briefly, a person who has remained a person and not become a thing – cannot help feeling lonely, powerless, isolated in present-day society. He cannot help doubting himself and his own convictions, if not his sanity. He cannot help suffering, even though he can experience moments of joy and clarity that are absent in the life of his “normal” contemporaries. Not rarely will he suffer from neurosis that results from the situation of a sane man living in an insane society, rather than that of the more conventional neurosis of a sick man trying to adapt himself to a sick society. In the process of going further in his analysis, i.e. of growing to greater independence and productivity, his neurotic symptoms will cure themselves.”

““A master at the art of living makes no distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion – he hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues with excellence what he is about and leaves others to determine, whether he is working or playing. He himself always knows, he is doing both.” – Wilfred A. Peterson 4 months ago

There is so much good in the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it hardly behooves any of us
To talk about the rest of us.

Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean. Who is neither tarnished or afraid – Raymond Chandler
What holds true of religions holds true for faith in its secular form… ideas… deteriorate… once they are not based upon the productive experience of each individual – Eric Fromm, Man For Himself, Faith as a Character Trait, Problems of Humanistic Ethics.
“There are some upon this earth of yours,” returned the Spirit, “who lay claim to know us, and who do their deeds of passion, pride, ill-will, hatred, envy, bigotry, and selfishness in our name, who are as strange to us and all our kith and kin, as if they had never lived. Remember that, and charge their doings on themselves, not us.” Spirit of Christmas Present – A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens
Sundays really are great when u know your off for the week :) – Aisha Sloan
“There are too many Tories in this bar” – war cry of Falkirk Labour Party :D
I particularly like the one from A Christmas Carol, it immediately resonates with me and gives me heart. Although I liked the Falkirk politician who thumped and heatbutted all the tories in the bar. 6 months ago
Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid… He is the hero, he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor, by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world.
Chandler, Raymond
Along with the poem If by Kipling I think there’s a lot to be learned by this quote. 7 months ago
Think I’ll be able to get some quotes for this, its hilarious, some of them are otherwise serious quotes but taken out of context and made funny, which I like knowing the original source material.
Like there was one from Erich Fromm, I dont know if it was from Art of Loving or which of his books but it was something along the lines that “Giving is the greatest sign of potency”, now knowing Fromm this was not meant as the form of innuendo it appeared to be.
Then there was another saying that he believed that everyones conception of heaven today was probably a giant department store, stocked with new stock daily, with plenty of money to buy things and probably more money than the neightbours. Knowing Fromm again this was probably meant to be more sharply critical than it turned out to be.
There was another quote in relation to the bible saying that the bible teaches to forgive your enemies, not your friends. :D :D
Great stuff, its hundreds of pages long and so probably is, in a way, this goal accomplished but I am going to keep it around for a while yet I think. I’ve always collected quotations, from when I was a kid and probably always will. 7 months ago
“Through violence you may murder a murderer, but you can’t murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can’t establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can’t murder hate. Darkness cannot put out darkness. Only light can do that…. Difficult and painful as it is, we must walk on in the days ahead with an audacious faith in the future. When our days become dreary with low-hovering clouds of despair, and when our nights become darker than a thousand midnights, let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, working to pull down the gigantic mountains of evil, a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows. Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice”.
~ Martin Luther King Jr 7 months ago
