Spare change 1 year ago

I’m collecting my spare change for Heifer International and it will be amazing to see how much I’ve collected by the end of Lent. Even though I’m not really Catholic anymore I like the idea of focused giving and a little sacrifice on behalf of a cause I like.

So...question.... 1 year ago

How many of you, if any, would participate in this challenge with me?

I’m thinking of giving up coffee for a month for health reasons. If I did this I’d actually have about $3.00 a day to put away for something else. Maybe pool it for Heifer International. $3×20 = $60 at least. I mean I buy a bagel with the coffee regularly so it’s probably more. $60 to an organization I care about, which would buy 3 flocks of chickens for some families in a third world country. It could also buy trees for someone to plant. If some people would be willing to tough this one out with me and support Heifer it would give me some backbone. Come on my fellow spoiled Americans! Anyone? Anyone?

I haven't made much progress here... 1 year ago

Maybe I should do something simple like put all my change in a jar and then just bring it to the bank and cut them a check. Found money to me. A jar full of American change goes a lot further in a 2nd or 3rd world country than here. A few lattes maybe for me, a flock of chickens to start a new life for someone else.

So my daughter inspired me.... 3 years ago

She was in junior high and saw a Heifer International catalogue. You can buy a gift of a hive of bees for example to start a third world family down the road to independence. You can buy ducks or a water buffalo for God’s sake! It helps these people get into their own business. She set up a little table and sold over priced licorice to her school mates. The idea is to help someone else in your name. It’s cool especially when you feel like you’ve got all you need and you don’t want another bad sweater for xmas. www.heifer.org
