Well, I love reading and love making lists (and reading them) so this seems like a good goal.

I’m instantly struck by questions: what kind of books should my list involve? All types I guess. And am I selecting the most important books ever? Or the best ones? Or the ones Id most like to read?

I’m thinking if I was gonna compile a list of the ‘greatest’ books of all time (most widely read or most influential), Id have to start with:

    1) The Koran- by God
    2) The Old Testament- also by God (the sequel)
    3) The New Testament- again, by God
    4) The Vedas- by..(you get the idea)
    5) The I Ching
    6) The.. (specify holy scripture)

and so on (being careful not to offend anyone) probably followed by:

) The Communist Manifesto by Marx and Engels
) The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
    ) The Republic by Plato

and any other political/economical ones, then maybe:

) The Interpretation of Dreams- by Freud
) Discourse on Method- by Descartes (I know!)
) The Rights of Man- by Paine
) General Theory of Relativity- by Einstein
) The Origin of Species- by Darwin

and any other scientificky ones, then not forgetting:

    ) The Odyssey- by Homer
    ) The Epic of Gilgamesh
) The Canterbury Tales- by Chaucer (or maybe just 1 tale)
    ) Some play by Shakespeare
    ) Faust- by Goethe
) Robinson Crusoe- by Defoe (was this the first ever novel?)
) Finnegan’s Wake- by Joyce (the hardest book ever written?)

and maybe my own favourite though its perhaps not so important:

) Godel, Escher, Bach: an eternal golden braid- by Douglas Hofstadter

Wow, got quite into that. Whaddya think? What have I missed? Any ideas
