I have a vacation at the end of April and I’d really like to take a bike trip somewhere. My friend just confirmed that she’s coming so now I can start making concrete plans. I have a lot to do. First of all, I’m planning on buying a new bike, because I don’t trust the one I have now to last a week. I also have to buy camping gear and plot out what will be realistic. I’ve never done anything like this before which makes me a little nervous, but also very excited!
How to go on a bike trip
How I did it: I had been planning this trip for awhile. I ended up investing a lot of money (bike, bike accesories, camping gear), but it was definitely worth it! I followed the 88 temple pilgrimage route around Shikoku. Unfortunately due to time constraints I was only able to go from Tokushima to Kochi city. I will have to finish the route another time because I had the time of my life!
Lessons & tips: Just do it. I prepared myself as much as I could but I still felt like I didn't know what I was doing as I set off. But I learned a lot of important lessons, and now I'm much better prepared for next time.
Resources: The book 'Adventure Cycle Touring' was very useful. There are also many good websites out there you can check out.

back in the summer of 2005 i went on a bike trip with my brother. it was a trip of a life time too. we started in michigan where we live. then we went west. we made it to the west coast. we traveled down the west coast for a few hundred miles down the oregon and northern california coast. then we cut across california and went through reno nevada. we stopped about 60 miles out side of reno where our parents picked us up in their RV. we went through 11 states by bike. it was a blast. im thinking about doing it again but hitting all 50 states.

Saw some nice villages and enjoyed the wildlife like frogs which could be heard along the road.
For a wee hint of what to expect along the way when trying a new route, consider using mapmyride.com or mapmyrun.com and switch on the “show elevation” box.

yesterday in the saddle broken up into 3 chunks. Trying to increase the long ride by 10% a week so 3 hrs should be reachable in about 5 weeks.
It’s a little odd when the motion sensor-controlled lights keep going off every 30 minutes or so when I’m alone on the bike in the room.

Raised the pace and shortened the ride time today. Felt good, heart rate cooperated.
Now visualizing a ride with a specific prospective new riding partner.
Trying to ensure that I can keep up with this rider before bringing up this idea…

if you went somewhere, took a bike along just for the purpose of entering a race? Not exactly.

Looks like it needs new rubber but it has been living in a shed for a few years without any use so we’ll see what else the mechanic suggests needs attention.

Get a bike. Maybe I should try to remember the combo to my bike lock, too?
i’ve always loved biking…during high school, when i couldn’t drive, it was my escape. i would hop on my bike and ride around for hours…..so now my goal is a 100-mile bike trip…and then i hope to increase it from there….i also heard of this thing called the Brake the Cycle of Poverty Tour, so maybe someday i’ll participate in that…..
