karmaflip is slowly re-emerging from depression
It seems the most important thing when you’re visiting a child that’s a young adult and lives on their own in another city is to keep your mind open as to what you’re going to see once you get there.
I went there prepared – not for what I actually saw, but prepared to see some things I wouldn’t like.
I think I did pretty well.
I helped where my help was needed, had some good times out with my daughter, kept my position on some things I felt very strongly about, and I’m getting the feeling I’ll be welcome next time I decide to go.
Not only did I go on the trip – I completed it and it was a GOOD trip!

- Agree on dates with dd – check
- Book train tickets over the phone – nope, because they have been upgrading their stupid system for the last 5 days! Go to next step.
- Buy train tickets – check
- Discuss with dd what she wants to do together and what she wants me to bring along – check
- Tie all loose ends here before I go – - check
- Pack my luggage, including the stuff she wants and a good book to read on the train – - check
- Drive to the train station – check

My daughter finished her degree by doing field work in South America and Spain, and then went to Scotland to study for her Masters. She finished that and then did another Masters while she was working. I am very proud of her and wish I could do more to help her in her life. I’d like to visit her in Scotland, but it’s very difficult and expensive to do that at the moment.
