Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Ty PowerSMART Goal Details - February 2012

I am doing a crappy job of follow-through on this, or at least on being systematic and recording it.

Specific:
I want to maintain an online presence that is regularly updated (my posts and comments on others’) on LiveJournal, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, 43Things, Goodreads, and via email, as well as keeping up to date on other new sites/technologies.

Measurable:
Post my own posts and comments:
Livejournal – 3x/wk minimum
Facebook – daily
Twitter – daily
LinkedIn – 1x/wk
43Things – 3x/wk
Goodreads – 1x/wk
My own site – 1pg/wk until created; update 2x wk
Check into new sites – monthly
Check info for new features on all sites – monthly

Achievable:
This is within my control to do.

Realistic:
It is pushing the bounds of realistic, not that I can’t do the updates but that I’ll remember to. This would be more realistic if posted in my study and in my journal as well as incorporated into my Evernote (no longer using Journlr) lists.

Timely:
I want to be in the groove of doing this by June and re-evaluate in September.

Steps to schedule:
Put reminders about this plan in my journal and in my study.
Add tasks to my Daily/Weekly lists.
Today: Start vigilance about this plan.

It is pushing the bounds of realistic, not that I can’t do the updates but that I’ll remember to. This would be more realistic if posted in my study and in my journal as well as incorporated into my Journler lists.

Timely:
I want to be in the groove of doing this by February 1 and evaluate March 31.

11/30/11 update: This is the first time I’ve actually reviewed this to evaluate. I have not been able to stay on top of this. As predicted, I lost sight of the specifics because they weren’t posted or in my journal, so every time I thought of this goal I thought of it only as a generality.

Steps to schedule:
Put reminders about this plan in my journal and in my study.
(Schedule this plan into Journler.)
Note daily tasks and weekly/day-specific tasks.
Add tasks to my Daily/Weekly lists.
Put Dec. 29 eval date on calendar
Today: Start vigilance about this plan.
December 29: evaluate my online presence plan.
