so i can recognize all 80 of grade 1 kanji…meaning, I can put an english word to each kanji. That’s it for now…Well, a handful i can read just because I’ve been exposed to a few over the course of picking up Japanese these past few years…so now I am working on stroke order and beginning to learn On and Kun readings. I love a challenge but this is sure to give me a headache :/

DocD is having a rainy day.
What is grade one? I can read about 300 (not enough for a newspaper) and write about 100. Many are station names, food, numbers and peoples names. I lived in Japan many years and highly reccommend going. How is your hiragana and katakana?

Riley is footloose and fancy free.
I realized this morning that I’ve attained the level of familiarity with grade 1 kanji such that the more advanced kanji now looks clearly and appreciably distinct. I’ve started to play “guess the grade” when I encounter unfamiliar kanji. Sometimes I get it right, although my guesses are pretty coarse grained: Grade 1, grade 2, or uh, beyond grade 2.
I’ve concentrated on the meanings, and have a lot of work to do in terms of learning the readings (on-yomi/kun-yomi) and how to compose the characters. Still having fun.

Just starting out. The onyomi and kunyomi are killing me! I’m not even sure of the most effective way to structure my flashcards.
I’m finding a Buddha Board really useful.

llong is growing slowly but surely
This is going to take some time. Just getting a handle on the katakana and hiragana is difficult.
Basically, daily study is required for this to happen.

Arrghhh, I’m half Japanese, in America, and I am terrible at writing or reading in Japanese. My little brother (third grade) is the lucky one, he got sent to Japanese school, while I stayed in an American elementary school. Now we’re both in American schools(elementary/jr-sr highschool), but he could probably still beat me in anything. My all-Japanese cousin wants to learn English badly, and I want to learn Japanese. I can’t write (much) or read, just speak a little and understand more. I want to prove to everyone I can do it. good luck to everyone else!

Of course, now to face a new goal; to master grade 2 kanji!

Due to a brain fart, I forgot to actually pay for the test this time… No kanji for me. We’ll have to try again in June. Any other Kanken takers out there?
