How I did it: If you go to the great wall area at badaling, take the harder side to climb if you can--it's a better experience and less people. There's some pretty steep stairs, but overall its not that hard! It was amazing. Read how I did it…
How I did it: Took a trip to China last summer. We stopped in Beijing and one of our day trips was out to the Great Wall! There are several sections of the wall you can climb on. They're all a bus ride/car ride away from Beijing....we went with our tour group. Read how I did it…

I highly recommend hiking the 9km between the Jinshanling and Simatai sections of the Great Wall. Most of the wall is in its original state and there aren’t many tourists, unlike at the Badaling section (the closest to Beijing). The scenery, and the Wall, were both spectacular.
Fall of 1994. Seems like a few lifetimes ago now. I would like to take the kids someday soon, but not during the Olympics. I will wear my Free Tibet t-shirt when I go.

Would also like to visit the Forbidden City.

I want to at least walk a few miles on it – would be great to do the Great Wall marathon, but very hard.

So, this is slowly becoming a reality. I have signed up for a charity event run by a company that specialises in this kind of thing.
In September next year I will be flying to Beijing to start a 9 day trek on the Great Wall of China. I will be doing this to raise £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support through sponsorship. I am sooo looking forward to it, not only because of the challenges I will face and the wonderful experience it is and the wonderful scenery etc, but also because I love fundraising so I’m looking forward to getting back into that too!
I’ve booked this so far in advance because I need to start my training as soon as possible. As my job involves a lot of travel, my training will be broken up quite a lot. They recommend a 6 month training plan, but I am making it a 10 month training plan, and in that 10 months I will be away on holiday for one month and away travelling for an estimated total of 2 months (normally a week or two at a time).
I am so excited about this and I don’t leave for another 10 1/2 months!!!! Goodness knows what I’ll be like the week before I go – high as a kite no doubt!!!!!!!
Did this in December of 2000 on our only visit to China to adopt our son Shane. We took a tour bus to the Great Wall after our first night in Beijing and before we met Shane for the first time (Shane was a 2-year-old toddler at the time). Being December it was freezing cold and very windy, but an amazing experience!
