A wonderful, wonderful movie from a technical sense.
The cinematography and camerawork was beautiful, I’ve rarely seen better. Gyllenhaal’s narration was perfectly scripted and executed. It reminded me stylistically of Edward Norton’s voiceovers in Fight Club, with a little Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket thrown in.
Definitely a must-see, in my book.

It was pretty good… but the only reason it was worth watching was because Jakie was in it ;)
totally a great movie if you have a sick sense of humor. I loved it and my friend was in it.
The movie had some good action scenes, which is really impressive considering that there were only about 2 minutes total of actual “war” in the movie. It had some funny parts too. Overall, a decent movie that is worth renting if you haven’t seen it yet, but I probably wouldn’t buy it.
Definitely not your average war movie. It’s a war movie without the war. Mostly it’s just a bunch of marines screaming at each other.
. . . but I know myself too well. If I don’t see a movie within a couple of weeks of it coming out I very rarely end up going. Maybe another time or on DVD.
I read Jarhead by Anthony Swafford before watching the movie. I liked the book and the movie didn’t disappoint me. As usual, the book included more, but the movie did a good job in covering the main parts…there was only some stuff they changed or did not include. It took me a while to get used to seeing Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx as marines, but they both did a pretty good job.
Maybe I’ll get a chance this weekend. Due to time constraints, I saw Chicken Little instead on Wednesday night. Two day, four showers and I still can’t get the stink of failure off about that one.
