How to go to bartending school
How I did it: I signed up for a two week course through the Professional Bartending School in Arlington, VA. Great teachers, great lessons. I learned sooo much before even being able to legally drink. The great thing about this school in particular is how much they let you practice. Half of every day is spent behind the bar taking orders and mixing fake drinks. As a result I got really accurate and 14-drinks-in-five-minutes fast. When I passed the written and practical exam I got a mixology degree (hehe!). I was also TAM-certified through the school.
Lessons & tips: Everyone will suddenly want a piece of you. "Well I like drinking gin... Can you suggest a good mixed drink?"

I realized that I don’t want to go to bartending school so that I can work in a bar… I just want to learn more about drinking (in the academic sense, of course ;). I got a book out from the library that I hope will satisfy this craving – “The Joy of Mixology.”
Waste of money…
Bartending is easy work, and you don’t really need to do a course to learn the basics.. You learn it all after an hour on the job anyways.
Well I’m giving this up. My boyfriend, who means the world to me, is deeply troubled by the woman he loves working in a bar. I believe him when he says it’s not a trust issue but I still really wanted to do this. I felt a little better about giving up this “dream” when immediately after I told him I decided against it, he was the same person he was before the subject even got brought up.
I’m starting at the Bartending Academy on October 22, 2007, next Monday!
I want a different job. I have a couple of friends who bartend and one who makes a decent living on the west coast. I am thinking it is time for a career change…this could be a way to change my life. I have been looking at all kinds of jobs but this could be a fun one.
I did it and it didn’t help me get a job bartending. I ended up at a dive bar in the ghetto with pervy boss!! Needless to say I’m not a bartender. And it was an expensive waste of money.
Well I have been talking about this for years and I still havent done it…I did get three days of bar training from a friend who needed me to cover some of her shifts, and it was pretty easy. the only thing is, after doing that for three days, I dont really think I want to pursue bartending anymore. I still would love to go to school just to learn how to make drinks for when I have parties and stuff…maybe it was just the place I was working at, in fact I know that did have a lot to do with how I felt..but it was really depressing watching people get drunk and be alcoholics and waste their lives away…just a thought
Its exciting to think about and I’ve looked into a bit, but when I think about it and think about my priorities at the moment, this one needs to go on the back burner for now. Maybe next summer! :)
