How to learn to play the harp
It made me

 "I started as a child with a wonderful teacher, studied and practiced for years, attended two conservatories and studied with more phenomenal teachers and now I play professionally."
How I did it: I started lobbying to play the harp when I was about four. I started piano when I was seven, which gave me a very good foundation for a lot of things. My parents found me a harp teacher when I was eleven and a small used harp. After two years on that they rented a pedal harp for a year and then bought me my first pedal harp when I was fourteen, which I still use to this day. I got a bachelor's degree from a conservatory with a famous pedagogue and then followed up with a master's at a different conservatory. I started performing professionally in high school but didn't become a full-time professional until grad school. I built an extensive free-lance career for years in North Carolina until I moved to SF a couple of years ago. Although I now have a salaried position, I still play and teach harp professionally and every year get more opportunities. Lessons & tips: Practice, but practice effectively. More is not necessarily better, but some every day is good. Also, slow is good, because your body really internalizes physical activities that you learn deliberately. Resources: Excellent teachers--no substitute for a really high-quality teacher.

I am missing three stings right now and I haven’t even ordered them yet.. I love this harp- I see it sitting there everyday but no time to dust it nevermind learn to play it:(

i always thought it was a beautiful instrument to look at and would be happy just to learn how to do one of those chewie mini harps

The harp lessons are going well. I’m still on basic stuff, but my teacher assures me I am a quick learner. I guess I am impatient. This is VERY different from piano! My teacher says she will teach me how to play a pedal harp next, although I am concerned I might REALLY like it, and cannot afford one. Ah well.

and I think it’s about time to get an instructor. I’ve realized this about myself: if someone else isn’t holding me accountable, I let things fall by the wayside.
A teacher is a very good idea.

It will be a long time before I have the time or money to invest in learning to play a harp. I’d rather focus on my kids, my piano, my garden and my art.
