Starting looking for online classes as I know I won’t be able to do it by myself
How to get PMP certification
How I did it: I took a 3 month prep course offered by a local PMI chapter through UC Berkeley Extension.
I consider myself a good test taker and found the exam challenging. PMI uses a vocabulary that is unique to its own methodology. Even seasoned project managers will find the concepts in the PMBOK different from the way they have applied project management throughout their careers.
This certification is a must if you are or plan to be a contract project manager. Many state agencies now have the PMP as a mandatory requirement for project management contracts. I hope this information is helpful.
Lessons & tips: I have known several people who have taken this exam with mixed results.
The persons I know who have passed have done one of the following:
- Participated in their local PMI chapter study group/prep class offering
- Attended the Cheetah 4-day prep class followed by the exam on the 5th day
The persons I know who have taken the exam and failed have did one of the following:
- Self studied
- Taken the Rita M. 3 day prep course, followed by self-study then the exam (2 people)
Resources: I did this several years ago, so the course may have changed:

Everyone I know that took this course passed (most expensive):

I completed my Master’s Certification in Project Management! What a relief. It’s been a couple years in the making and I’ve finally been able to juggle work, social life, family obligations to finish the final two classes in less than 6 months. I’ve learned a lot in the process and some really great things to help me professionally as well as personally.

Well, I just took a two day course offered by my company which gives a high level overview of what PMP entails from a PMI perspective. We went through the major chapters in the PMBOK and did some exercises to understand things like WBS, Precendence Diagrams and Earned Value. A lot of it is intuitively done by me in my day to day work already. It is a matter of formalizing it.
The PMBOK 3rd edition and Rita Mulcahy’s books were cited as good resources for exam prep. I have to agree that PMI’s view of the world and project management’s role in it may not align with reality but it is a good certification to have under your belt so I am going to go for this.
This will also help me gauge my potential for getting back into the study groove before I tackle something more ambitious like CISSP (or a MBA).
Does anyone know how strict they are with the eligibility requirements? Finding documented evidence of 3 years/4500 hours may be an arduous task.

“After the cert, was it worth it. How much did it change your income? Was an MBA required for it to be useful?”
