Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea 3/5 3 months ago

Just saw this today! It gets 3 of 5 stars… It was very cute, and the artwork and music was as usual stunning. There were some funny moments as well. However, it didn’t really “hit” me as other Ghibli films have. There were a lot of unexplained things concerning Ponyo and her magic, the balance of nature, etc. Miyazaki also seemed to start to make a case for environmental protection and appreciation (a common theme in his films) but it was never really played out. It will definitely be enjoyed by younger kids though; when I was leaving the theater I heard a young girl say “Mom! I want a fish like Ponyo!” Overall a cute movie.

Whisper of the Heart 4/5 4 months ago

I watched Whisper of the Heart! I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The plotline was cute and fairly realistic, but it got predictable at times, and in the beginning you couldn’t really tell the direction it was going in. The characters were realistic. The artwork and music was beautiful, and I am surprisingly in love with the song “Country Roads.” Many Miyazaki/Ghibli films seem to have that one song, instrumental or vocal, that touches you.

Miyazaki/Ghibli have a recurring theme of following your dreams, running into obstacles & the effect, and learning to pick yourself back up. I like that.

One other thing that bothered me was the dialogue… it got very cheesy at times, such as the use of the word “corny” (does anyone say that anymore?). However, I think this could be attributed to that the movie was released in I believe 1995. Still, there were some other cheesy lines that could have been avoided/rewritten.

Still, good movie, a keeper. Definitely inspiring.
