I don’t know what my ‘zymurgy closet’ looks like but I still have most of the equipment. I started off with bare essentials and then bought a cool new gadget each go around. The best thing after you’ve made a satisfying batch is bottling it and taking it to a gathering of family or friends to unleash it. Only the very best I tend to share cause I dig the compliments :)

How I did it: I compiled all the equipment I needed piece by piece. Cooked 6 pounds of light malt extract for an hour, adding .9 oz of hops along the way. Placed in a 5 gallon carboy and fermentation locked with a u full of vodka. Bottled after 2 weeks. Read how I did it…

How I did it: After receiving a starter brew kit for my birthday - I set out with a mission to make a simple porter. The wonderful people at my local brew shop walked me thru the process, filled my cart with ingredients and set me on my way. I ran into some trouble near the beginning, but with there help and the help of a fellow brewer it turned out great. It won't win any awards, but it tastes like beer and thats a success in my book. How I did it: Probably didn't do as much research as I should have done, but got started once I had all the equipment ready and just followed some instructions (turns out these were pretty basic). Patience is important and I actually allowed longer than was necessary for each stage of the process. I've ended up with a nice, drinkable lager, but I've learnt so much from this experience that I'm already looking at a new kit so I can perfect the pro… Read how I did it…

How I did it: I work for a brewery so doing a home brew kind of comes with the territory. Oddly enough I don't drink beer so I still have no idea how it turned out. I made a spiced ale with cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, etc. I was told it wasn't bad, which is pretty much all I was hoping for seeing as it was my first time. The company provided the brewing kit, which is now collecting dust in my dining room.I say it was worth it because I like trying … Read how I did it…
How I did it: I first tried a brew-on-premis where they have all the equipment and ingredients. Then I went to a local homebrew store and got a book and the essential ingredients and equipment. The easiest way to start is with a kit (homebrew stores will sell things like a 'sam adams' clone kit) that has all the correct ingredients rather than trying to find all the correct quantities of each ingredient in a recipe. I’ve actually been brewing with my brother for a couple years now, but just found this site today. We’ve only brewed with extracts at this point, but it turn out tasty. Keeping clean is probably the most important part of the process, but you have to use the proper cleaners. There’s a ton of entry level info out there, but you can harvest your own yeast keg your brew and various other things if you want to go more in depth with the hobby.
