geeks at work
I’ve worked with geeks on the job all my life, yet it never occurred to me that I could make personal friends in the office. It’s funny in a way. I always feel so comfortable working along side geeks, it almost makes no sense to disturb that comfort and peace by interacting in more personal ways.

I have several private programming projects I am working on now, and I usually have some dorky sort of scheme or something I do behind closed doors… and it’s sort of unnerving trying to communicate with people about these things, when they a) don’t care b) don’t understand, or c) have no experiences or interests that even closely correlate with mine.
I’m a pretty normal person on the street, and at work, and wherever, but its just one side of the coin. It would be nice to interact with people (face to face) that might have similar projects or sets of interests as I do. Most of the problems I have with setting and accomplishing goals in these areas have to do with having no one to talk to about them.
Absolutely no one in my peer group that I interact with on a daily basis has any interest in most of the things I am most interested in. I feel like a boston fan, in new york. The few ‘geeky’ friends I do have, have no where near the depth of depravity I do… they just want to watch a bunch of sci-fi and play video games. This isnt the 4th grade, even the cool kids do that kinda stuff nowadays gosh. Poser geeks.

Since college I’ve been geek-deprived. I seem to be the only one at work, and I don’t know anyone around here. It’s tough when nobody understands half the stuff I find interesting. Any geeks around Stafford, VA?

Ok. I have at least one geek friend. And he thinks I’m a geek. We always have fun chatting just about anything. Lately he kept wanting to talk about this game he’s trying to write in PHP. I happen to be php diva. Ok, I’m also a SQL diva, ORACLE diva, java diva, etc, etc.
It’s a start.

It’s funny. I realized that I’ve worked with computer geeks all my life, yet I have not even one computer geek friend. We all just bury ourselves in front of the computer and don’t really talk to one another about personal lives. When we have questions, we just go online to post and answer computer related questions. I can be in a room full of computer geeks all my life and still end up not having a geek friend :)
