You know, before I left for this trip, I had a friend tell me that Venice is, in her opinion, “not worth it.”
Screw that. It was amazing. The whole thing: The insane amount of pigeons in St. Mark’s square, the basilica, the masks, the little shops with accordion-players outside them sipping wine, the mysterious history and Shakespeare references, the Grand Canal, and of course, the gondolas. It was all freaking worth it even if it is overpriced.
I got a collector’s spoon, and a mask – the only souvenirs I need – and a thousand pictures with my honey, a few of which feature us kissing with a canal in the background. We took a boat tour and a walking tour, so as to get the in-depth story on the city. Among the more dramatic things that happened, I got so sick I had to lie down in the street, I picked up a pigeon in my bare hands (!), and studmuffin tried gelato for the first time. We never did ride a gondola, though. He was too cheap!
Our hostel was wonderful. It gave us a map, directions to a grocery store, and it let us store our luggage the final day until our train ride to Paris. It even had air conditioning, THANK THE LORD. The view from the windows was pleasant, and so were the roomies.
We got lost in all the twisting streets, and I highly recommend doing that. And I got a picture of him, the love of my life, looking at me with a Venetian sunset in the background.
Pure perfection.
I read a book by Madeline Brent when I was younger. A young orphan named Cadi moves from England to Venice to live with her real family after finding out that she is a countess. Her uncle traps her in a palazzo and when she escapes, tries to kill her so she cannot clame the title. I’ve been intrigued by Venice ever since.

So worth doing. This place was the creme da la creme for me. The Piazza de San Marco was quite the locale. Everything about Venice is so very romantic. I had the best cappucino of my life there and the food is just to die for. The best.
I am a huge history buff…grew up in an Italian home. dream of being in Venice…someday
A bit touristy I know, but having been once when I was 16, I would like to visit again as a grown-up. Thinking about it, I preferred Florence when I visited years ago, so I should visit both.
ahh the benefits of intereurope travel! went for 2 nights this past weekend, and had a great time shopping and eating haha. gondola rides are too expensive but id ont feel i missed out.. i recommend visiting if you have the means—ryanair is cheap!!
I’ve been there about 5 times. Love Venice! What a romantic and unique place. Also went to the carnival this year. Was an experience and I loved to take photos. I added one :)
I’ve heard it’s the most romantic city in the world, and it does look from photos like a truly amazing place… a place to propose maybe… yeah right… anyway a place to be discovered, explored, to eat pasta and drink lots of red wine, to take hundreds of photos, to ride a gondola and to walk along the cobbled roads…
Venice. First full day in Italy… Beautiful day, great people (except for the grumpy gelato lady who yelled at me because I didn’t have correct change), tons of pigeons, yummy wine, more photo ops that one could point a camera at!
