The gear helps ... well at least with the quality 1 week ago

I’ve been mulgeing on with a snappy compact and after running out of settings and getting a little fed up by it’s low light performance, I found a Canon 1000D and the new 18-200mm telephone lens. They had over a hundred quid off, so what was I supposed to do ignore them?

I guess there’s only so far you can get with the rule of thirds, contrasting elements and reflections. If your camera’s bunk the results are still be sub-par.

Now the photo quality has improved a lot, plus when using the RAW settings you can re-adjust and re-expose an awful lot. So alright I’m not necessarily taking better pics, but after a little Photoshop work the results are a huge leap forward.

Now just need to work on being in the right place at the right time ….

    I think... 5 months ago

...I’m getting better. I’m certainly taking a lot more, and the “keepers” level is much higher. Most of the things I am photographing now are wildlife (which I love), but not an artistic challenge. So this was a recent one from a Bronze Age burial mound near my home. This is “The Bronze Age and The Space Age”

Took Time to Experiment 12 months ago

As I was waiting for the 4th of July Boat Parade to start, I experimented with my camera while taking pictures of an osprey and some flowers. Of course, most of the pictures were sent to the trash, but that’s what experimenting is for … discovering the best way to take a shot and not worrying about the ones that didn’t turn out so well!

Digital camera gone 16 months ago

Gave the camera to someone who knows how to use it AND has the time. I have a point and shoot. That is good enough for me

    some improvement 16 months ago

I’ve certainly become a better photographer. I’m definitely not a pro or anything, but I’m ready to call this done…

Putting the "Law of Averages" to work for me 17 months ago

If I want to take better photographs, I can start by taking more photographs. To that end, I’ve gotten into the habit of carrying my camera along everywhere I go (even though that usually just means back and forth to work).

That does mean that in stray moments of boredom (long lines etc.) I’m likely to start thinking like a photographer and find something interesting to shoot just to have something to do.
