I’ve already started… by doing some general stuff around my bedroom, but I want to get this done by the end of the month, so I can be sure I am insured for enough… You know, to be safe

I bought a home inventory binder kit a few months ago, but haven’t started this yet. Need to get moving.
first of all, this has been on my list for awhile. I bought myself a new camera, and recently purchased some software designed for this very purpose (and made for a Mac).
its been a busy couple months, so I haven’t started.
this past weekend, someone broke into our home and stole a number of valuables. included were a couple diamond rings, one which was inherited and has no paperwork. the value of having a picture of it would go a long way with the insurance company. at this point, they’ll be relying on a description instead.
even though its late, I plan to begin this project (at last) over the holidays.
once completed, I will let my insurance company know (have a DVD copy of it). did you know some insurance companies offer a discount to people with this kind of detailed accounting of their possessions?
Happy Holidays to all.

Our home: got love?
Check.
Inventory done. (This occurred to me when I woke up this morning.)
Edit on October 24, 2008: I realize that you can’t live on love, and for insurance purposes, we need to have a list of items to replace. So I am being tongue-in-cheek. Mostly I was tired of seeing this on my main list. It’s just not in my top ten.
sue820 The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.
I have been meaning to do this for years, as it really is helpful for insurance purposes A video record should be fine.

I feel the need to do this, to focus on it; to get our house in order.
I should be moving out soon and so I dont have as much stuff to inventory and so should start now while its still a smaller amount.
Things are still in boxes! Not only do I need to unpack things, but also need to find the time, and figure out where to store things once the boxes have been unpacked.
We need one just for insurance purposes in case of disaster. Even with simplifying possessions, we want to be able to show what we do(did) have if something happens!
It’s not fancy or perfect, but I finally did my home inventory.
I took digital pictures of all the expensive possessions in every room in my house. Then, I copied them to two CD’s. The first I put in a fire-proof lockbox. The other I gave to someone I trust, just to have one off-site in a different house.
On the most expensive things, I have the model and serial numbers written down in a file on my computer. Those are archived automatically with the rest of my documents to an online service.
If the worst happens, we can at least prove to the insurance company what we owned and lost.
