We found out on Friday that February 20th is the final taping of Late Night With Conan O’Brien.

We are driving up there for this Friday’s show to try and get in with standby tickets. We also found out the first guest that night is Russell Crowe!! Say a prayer for us that we get in! =D

But wait, I’ll be coming Conan…just give me a few years…

Fun, but barely worth the effort compared to other shows in NYC 2 years ago

This was my third TV Show taping in as many days during my June, 2007 NYC vacation. We also saw The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, and they were much more fun and much better audience experiences, so I was a little let down by this, our final show in the city. Conan doesn’t play the crowd as well before the show, and the whole experience of getting into the theater is a mess. I’m in the process of typing up the details in my travel blog, so if you are going and want to know what to expect, go look for chips-travels on livejournal.com

If you plan on this, the thing to know is to call WAY ahead, like two or three months if memory serves. Then on the day of, go to 30 Rock anytime you want to get your ticket & wristband. Then you can leave and go do whatever you want for the day and come back for the taping. The tickets are numbered, so the earlier you get there, the lower the number, the closer you sit.

..and easy to get stand by tickets. just show up at NBC really early (like 7am) the day of the show. stand in line outside. get stand by tickets. hope that there’s a little extra room that night.

Bring a sweater! 2 years ago

Bring a sweater… that jewel box of a studio is kept very, very cold.

My sister-in-law put in for the tickets and surprised my brother for his birthday. It was me, the sis-in-law, both little brothers and, technically, my nephew too, since sis-in-law was preggers at the time. (Gosh, I wonder if there’s any ill effect from experiencing O’Brien in utero?!)

While you’re there, you may as well take the NBC Studio Tour, and check out the gift shop, too.

Untitled 2 years ago

I went in 1998, on my first visit to NYC. It was when Andy was still on the show, and it was really awesome, because I was pretty addicted to the show back then and watched nightly. It’s also weird to be on the same stage where David Letterman’s old show on NBC was done, which I also used to watch a lot.

The one word of advice I have is that if you mail in for tickets, they give priority to requests from out-of-town. If you’re a local, get your cousin out in Iowa to mail in for you or something. The long wait was a bit of a drag, but it’s much easier to get tickets than it is for Letterman or the Daily Show, so it’s not that bad at all.

So much fun! 3 years ago

He’s SO tall! And thin! And the studio’s so tiny! Just wish I’d been there for better guests… Walter Cronkite was a little boring.
