Shuttermagic is off work for 2 days. Yahy!
It has helped in a few scary moments. Fortunately never had to actually carry anything major out but I was prepared and calm.
How I did it: Through one of the branches of the company I work for. One town requires a certain number of employees to be certified per amount of seats in the store. So, we had a gentleman come in an teach us the ways. He works as a mentor through a local foster care program & is also licensed to teach/train CPR and first aid. You can also go to your local Red Cross to find information on classes and courses. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I'm an LMT and i need to be certified for CPR/First Aid in order to keep my license. It was mandatory. But it was also arranged by my <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Massage School and the cost of the class was included in my tuition. I think it was about 6 hours, i completed all my requirements within one school day. Read how I did it…

How I did it: My freshman year in high school (about 5-6 years ago) we all were required to learn first aid and CPR in our health class. That took about a week. When I was working in a retirement home (before I went off to work in a veterinary hospital), we were required to either become certified for the first time or renew our certification. It was a one-day course and was a lot of fun! Read how I did it…

How I did it: I obtained my first certificate when I attended Job Corps. We watched videos and practiced on mannequins all day. At the end of the day we took a test (that we went over before we turned it in) and received out FA/CPR cards in the mail. I think the class was from 8am-4pm that day. Really simple. How I did it: I had to become certified for my undergraduate major. and I've maintained my certification for the past 4 years. It's hard when you aren't in the same place when the classes are offered. Read how I did it…

ForAmilee is no longer having a good week
I would sure hate for someone I love to die right in front of me, when there are programs offering this type of training available at all times of the year.
Living in Southern California under the looming threat of “the Big One” makes this goal seem particularly relevant. If find myself in a situation where I am so close to danger but fortunate enough to avoid injury and remain capable of helping someone, I would be terribly ashamed if the only thing that stopped me was my own ignorance.
You never know!
I want to take a child first aid class and an adult one. I have a 4 year old and 5 year old and I wouldnt know the first thing to do in an emergency. Gotta do this asap!
it took just one day and was pretty straight forward. i went through the red cross. i did miss a couple of questions, one because i just totally marked the wrong box. doh!

Actually, I’m re-training for CPR/FA as I didn’t manage to register for the refresher course in time. It’s kind of a drag having to make myself attend the full 8 lessons after a long day at work, but I find myself enjoying the classes.
And I suppose giving up 8 evenings is a small price to pay. I probably will never get to use my knowledge, but I would rather be prepared just in case.
On my 4th lesson already. If all goes well I could check this off by the 23rd.
I don’t think it’s worth taking the course unless you commit to recertify yourself every 6 months or so. You take the course, the knowledge is in your brain for about 30 days and then its gone.
Plus, it seems like more and more “health care professionals” are questioning certain CPR techniques. Should I give 15 chest compressions or 30 chest compressions? Should I give the person 2 breaths or skip the breaths all together and just stick to the chest compressions? Where should I feel for their pulse? Should I feel for one at all or just look at the color of their skin?
I give up!
You know, I think this is going to have to wait until the summer, or maybe even until college. Not that I’m giving it up! Just postponing it. Already got a lot on my plate.
I recommend this for everybody, young or old. It is a very important thing to learn. You could save a life!
Getting certified is not worth it at all, unless you get retrained and refresh you skills/memory at least every year. I was certified in 2005 and I don’t remember a single thing… yet my training doesn’t expire ‘till April 2009. So don’t bother unless you’re willing to spend the money for retraining every six months to a year.
