"A long road, filled with hopes and disappointments, but very rewarding in the end."
How I did it: I spent weeks going to used car lots, and checking out online sites such as cars.com. Sometimes I'd see a great looking car, but it was too much money, or the fuel economy was bad. Once in a while I'd find what seemed to be the perfect car, only to go to the dealership and find that it was recently sold.
Finally, though, I had all the money, and I found a great car, and it was still there! So I bought it. And it has given me so many freedoms. It was well worth the time, effort, and money.
Lessons & tips: This is one of the biggest investments of your life ... choose the car wisely.
Resources: I looked up local used car dealerships and made a lot of great use out of www.cars.com
