"Ruthlessly did I evict all that would remain permanent blemishes to my vision of my 'perfect' domicile."
How I did it: I was not afraid to try things. I would hang several posters to the wall, but I was not afraid to remove any that seemed out of place.
I got rid of a plastic shelf, and replaced it with a large mobile closet unit. Painted white it matched my room.
At one point all the towels used in the bathroom next to my room (which lacks storage space) were placed on top. A convenient place to put them, except that people kept barging in to my room just for towels (my housemates occasionally forget that it's still MY room) I found a new home for the towels in an office space in the house. This walk-in closet "absorbed" a great deal of books, documents, old models in boxes, tools, bike stuff and more that piled up in various places.
A large unused amount of space remained on my dresser. I did not fill it of course, I placed books I read, or reference, on there as a convenient place to access them.
I have a small pile of clothes I wear often in a pile at the corner of my bed. Does not look very tidy, but I like it. The clothes are usually just the jeans and shirts I wear often.
I got rid of my alarm clock, replacing it with something I already had, my cell phone with an alarm built in.
I moved one bookshelf into an unused doorway, it worked freeing up space for this awesome wall hanging, and a place for my bicycle.
A small bedside stand is all I need, it is enough space for a book, and a small lamp containing one 14w CFL bulb.
Electronics are limited: I have my laptop, cell phone, digital camera (with it's own batteries and charger) and a AA/AAA battery charger. For now, this is all I feel I need. There is no TV, so no cable/satellite, or stereo. And I like it that way.
Lessons & tips: Do not be afraid to try things, many different things.
Having a bit of a theme can help focus your efforts.
My "theme" revolved around minimalism and keeping things easy to access.
Resources: None in particular, just some home improvement stuff, some hand tools. And your creativity of course! that's an important resource.
