While I was away on a business trip over the weekend, my house was broken into and my laptop was stolen (along with other items…sigh). I had planned to replace it at some point. This just forced the issue. So today I got a new HP Pavilion with 4GB RAM, 320GB HD storage and a DVD-RW drive, a huge upgrade over the stolen computer. Now if I can persuade my insurance company to cover at least half the cost, I’ll be a bit more happy about having a new PC.

How I did it: I worked a lot and got enought money to buy a great notebook, i wanted something lighweight but no so little, i got a 13' XPS notebook with ubuntu, i'll not pay for a bad OS Read how I did it…
How I did it: So my comission check came in yesterday, enough to finally buy a new computer. I was going to get one on the best buy website, since they had a brand new Toshiba for 379, but I wouldn't get it by Monday when the libraries are closed (MLK day). So out of the blue I decided to look on craigslist and I found an even nicer one: A Dell, 2 years old, Windows XP, Microsoft office 2007, and virusprotection already installed--for even less! Only 3… Read how I did it…

How I did it: Old computer was already dead and in the shop. Went to my local shop, talked to them, picked one of their models, ordered it, they set it up, I paid and brought it home. But... now I need to set it up! Using a borrowed laptop till then. Read how I did it…
How I did it: The old one died and there is just no way I can be without a computer for long... it's my link to the world. I bought a new Dell on eBay and had about a month's worth of hassles before it arrived. When it did, it wasn't the same model that had been listed! But, it was just as good and I didn't feel like dealing with the return process, especially since the seller was obviously having some real issues. So I kept it and so far (9 months or … Read how I did it…

when the computer I was on lost its modem. It wasn’t even my computer, but in order to get back on line and keep working, I just had to go ahead and get the damn thing already.
All that research lead me to believe that the computers in my price range were pretty much all the same. Not fancy, but fitting my needs.
Rather than get a refurbished one or search online for the best deal, I just went to Bestbuy and got the one I’d been looking at on line.
Bada bing bada bing.
After my uncle fixing the internet, and finding out maybe his old computer didn’t crash after all, I’m up and online with a new, not fancy, but faster computer.
Now I have so much work to do I’m a little overwhelmed, but I just have to take it one step at a time.

Today is New Computer Day! I will be participating in an anxiety fueled dance in the hopes of appeasing the great tech gods so that all will go smoothly. Hopefully all my files and photos will be freshly accessible, my programs will run correctly, and I’ll be back online with a sweeter, smaller, swifter (and most importantly, functional) machine. Then I can catch up properly on the last week or so.
You know it just struck me – I should have a “geek appreciation” party for all my lovely tech friends who periodically rescue me from the black screen of death. I could decorate a cake like a circuit card, with green icing and those little silver sugar balls… or would it be dangerous to get that many ridiculously clever and able people together – they might concoct a plan to take over the world. Not that that would be a bad thing…

Perhaps I checked off that “fix my computer” goal prematurely – it is now an ex computer. Definitely not just sleeping. Every now and then (like now) I get a weak wireless signal via my laptop, and that will have to supply my online fix for a while.
Yesterday tech-friend #2 came by and after the system rebooted itself repeatedly he declared it pretty much as useful as burnt toast. He says he has a decent computer he isn’t using and would be happy to let me have it, so he’s coming by with it Friday. His gf and I are old friends, so we’re making a tech+dine night of it.
Until then I’ll be getting to know my laptop a bit better and hoping the mystery wireless holds out. (bugger – I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to get caught up now).
My current computer is broken and it will cost a lot to fix it. So the best option is buying a new one. I have the money and I’ve found a good one for a fair price. All I have to do is go to the store and buy it.

My old computer was getting slow and annoying . . . then about 2 weeks ago, a piece of it shorted out entirely. I faced the choice: Fix old, out-of-date computer. Get new computer.
I’m not quite used to it yet and keep making typos because the keys seem to be a little closer together than on my old one but other than that and a few aggravations with Windows Vista, I’m loving it. So fast in comparison to the old one!
I had this built back in 2006 but it’s caused a load of trouble since.
One thing after another has gone wrong and I’m not going to pay the Geek Squad to do a $99 dollar diagnostic to tell me that’s it’s something stupid again, like the fans being installed backwards. So basically I have an $600 dollar glowing ottoman. (Though I will say that it makes a very pretty foot rest, green & glowing dragon case purr)
The boy-o believes he can fix it with some time, but we’re still doing the distance thing right now. He needs time to tinker and it’s hard when we only see each other three days at a time every few months.
At any rate, when he does move up we’ll at least have one working desktop between us. Maybe we can salvage some of the parts from comp. There are still good pieces in it, they just don’t work with each other. Murf.
Well I don’t really NEED it, but I’d like to get a new gaming rig (desktop) before I head off to college… my laptop is getting kind of old and worn, and just doesn’t cut it for new games with extremely high system demands like Crysis.
I guess all I need to accomplish this is to make around 1.5 thousand bucks, maybe a bit more for a monitor and stuff… but that’s a separate goal in and of itself.
-U! a.k.a. Uriel A. Duran wouldn't mind to sell out but so far he's only selling in (dammit!)
(bought it in another city and had to carry the machine all the way from there, but i’m now the proud owner of a new computer)
