Ru ~ dig deeper glitter in her wake...

Tomorrow isn't ALWAYS a day away 15 hours ago

Today is New Computer Day! I will be participating in an anxiety fueled dance in the hopes of appeasing the great tech gods so that all will go smoothly. Hopefully all my files and photos will be freshly accessible, my programs will run correctly, and I’ll be back online with a sweeter, smaller, swifter (and most importantly, functional) machine. Then I can catch up properly on the last week or so.

You know it just struck me – I should have a “geek appreciation” party for all my lovely tech friends who periodically rescue me from the black screen of death. I could decorate a cake like a circuit card, with green icing and those little silver sugar balls… or would it be dangerous to get that many ridiculously clever and able people together – they might concoct a plan to take over the world. Not that that would be a bad thing…

A visit from the techno reaper 3 days ago

Perhaps I checked off that “fix my computer” goal prematurely – it is now an ex computer. Definitely not just sleeping. Every now and then (like now) I get a weak wireless signal via my laptop, and that will have to supply my online fix for a while.

Yesterday tech-friend #2 came by and after the system rebooted itself repeatedly he declared it pretty much as useful as burnt toast. He says he has a decent computer he isn’t using and would be happy to let me have it, so he’s coming by with it Friday. His gf and I are old friends, so we’re making a tech+dine night of it.

Until then I’ll be getting to know my laptop a bit better and hoping the mystery wireless holds out. (bugger – I don’t know if I’ll ever manage to get caught up now).

When I was naught but a whippersnapper of 10 tender years, I began visiting local libraries on a regular basis, so as to plant myself in front of their computers and shamelessly “nerd out” for hours at a time. It was there, in the library, that I learned to use HTML and built my very first webpage. (Regrettably, it consisted of nothing more than a plagiarized work from BOP Magazine and some informational snippets about the Backstreet Boys. Lolz. Sorry about that, BOP…)

Shortly thereafter, my family was able to purchase a PC for home use. I spent countless hours absorbed in internet geekery (web design and multi-player online gaming, primarily), and I’ll have you know that it filled my young heart with a profound and indescribable joy! ::slams fist on desk::

Not too much has changed. :) I’m 23 now, and I work from home as a web developer and a ChaCha guide. A great many of my interests and hobbies involve being online or using my computer (as a TV, as a stereo, etc.) in some way. The love affair that began when I fell, head-over-heels, for computing goodness all those years ago has only intensified over time. <3 There's no question as to whether buying a new computer will pan out to be a worthwhile investment for me; that thing is gonna get some serious use and some serious TLC.

After 11 or 12 years of fantasizing about owning a laptop (jeez… being poor really sucks the big one, huh?), I was finally able to place an order for a laptop of my very own on the 22nd of last month – and not a moment too soon! The power supply in my current machine (the only other computer I’ve ever technically owned in my lifetime – a low end desktop that I scrimped and saved to purchase while I was working at Wal-Mart a few years back) has been failing for months now, and has already died on me once. (I know I’ve got an extra power source lying around somewhere, but I’ve never installed one before and the idea of screwing something up by accident kinda freaks me out). I can totally do without the stress of constantly wondering how long my computer (which I need in order to work) is going to stay functional, so I’m pretty effing stoked about this purchase (on a number of levels). ;P

As of this weekend, the order status on my laptop has officially been upgraded from “In Production” to “Shipped.” That means it’ll be here within 3 to 5 business days (and my TOTELLY AWSUME!!!!!!111 external sound card should be arriving soon after that). Once the items are in my possession and the charge for $992.64 has been finalized on my debit card (it was “pending” for about a week and then it disappeared completely; I suspect they may have processed the payment as credit, so it’s taking a bit longer to post), then I will be able to check this goal off my list. Woohoo~! =D

My current computer is broken and it will cost a lot to fix it. So the best option is buying a new one. I have the money and I’ve found a good one for a fair price. All I have to do is go to the store and buy it.

My old computer was getting slow and annoying . . . then about 2 weeks ago, a piece of it shorted out entirely. I faced the choice: Fix old, out-of-date computer. Get new computer.

I’m not quite used to it yet and keep making typos because the keys seem to be a little closer together than on my old one but other than that and a few aggravations with Windows Vista, I’m loving it. So fast in comparison to the old one!

Well I don’t really NEED it, but I’d like to get a new gaming rig (desktop) before I head off to college… my laptop is getting kind of old and worn, and just doesn’t cut it for new games with extremely high system demands like Crysis.

I guess all I need to accomplish this is to make around 1.5 thousand bucks, maybe a bit more for a monitor and stuff… but that’s a separate goal in and of itself.
