I did it this year! 3 years ago

It’s completely fabulous, but so totally overwhelming.

WAY too many shows! It’s impossible to know which ones to pick. Fortunately, my goal was to see as many world-premier musicals as possible, and so this cut down the list considerably. After that, I cherry-picked miscellaneous commedy and theater acts that looked like fun (or were highly reviewed in “The Scotsman”).

I do worry about the festival in terms of serving the performers. Most of the pieces I saw were less than 1/2 full. One (an avant-garde russian adaptation of Snow White) only had three people in the audience.

I know that the ethic of the Fringe is to accept any show, without a jury process (although, I believe the venues have some say…). And that is certainly admirable. But you have to wonder if the unrestrained growth couldn’t be handled better – especially for the presenters.

Now that I think about it, the musicals were, on the whole, better attended than the plays or commedy acts.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival, 3 years ago

the world’s largest arts festival, takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland during three weeks every August. Would love to go one day.

Not being able to go this year, I seem to have put together a mini-Edinburgh Fringe of my own – this is the time of year when many performers tour their acts in London, and I got tickets to see quite a few of them – both performers who were at the Edinburgh Fringe and theatre and comedy in general:

23rd Sep – Kindness and Exuberance – Josie Long
30th Sep – My Husband Is A Spaceman – Kazuko Hohki
1st Oct – NO2ID present Who Do You Think You Are? (standup benefit gig)
5th Oct – The IF.comeddies Awards Shows – Josie Long/ David O’Doherty
26th Oct – One Big Laugh (comedy benefit gig for the Mental Health Foundation)

It’s a good month :)
