Grew up learning to tie flys and fly fish.... 2 years ago

One of the most awesome experiences- and baiting the hook is so much cleaner! I grew up tying flys for my dad, and practicing casting in the back yard. The highlight of my flyfishing was a trip waaaaay up into the Canadian mountains to a little cabin on a lake that was really roughing it (no running water, outdoor shower with lake water, outhouse, bears, and a plethora of trout!).... that experience I’d have to say was incredible, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat…. as long as someone else cleans the fish for me….!

Zaleya is ecstatic my candidate won in a landslide!!

    Glacier Park 2 years ago

The teens and I went on a road trip and ended up at Glacier in Montana. We had a great trp going there, staying there and coming home. My son liked to fish and only had a salmon rod so we went to a little store just outside Glacier and bought gear to go try fly fishing.
We went and tried it. The otter just across the river looked like it was feeding well but we didn’t catch anything. A man with his granddaughters gave us flies and taught us the basics. A very nice person. We had a fun tume and, as I figure it, it is the best way to fish. I don’t just like sitting there waiting for a bobbin to bob, too fidgety for that. Highly recommend trying it.

well, we finally bought some fly fishing rods, and then took a little trip on saturday to a nearby river. it was fantastic. we’re hooked now, so to speak.

if you give it some time
sorta has a steep learning curve
there are great spots all over the country, IMHO CO, ME and UT are where its at unless you have the cash to go to Alaska
for gear there are much better values around than Orvis, though if you want the best of the best Orvis is hard to beat
for a Rod/line/reel combo cabelas makes some decent stuff, one of my favorite rods is actually a cabela’s combo, I like it every bit as much as an Oris that I had a few years back that was twice as much.
Also, redington makes some great rods that are easy on the wallet

we watched ‘a river runs through it’ recently.
also, i bought a bunch of fly fishing books for my bf’s birthday. now we just have to decide what equipment to buy. and where to go… anyone know of a good destination for a fishing holiday?

we went to orvis yesterday. we got distracted by the cowboy hats, but eventually we got around to looking at fly fishing equipment. i think it’s worth it just to go to different outfitters, see what’s available, see how much everything costs, etc. we have plenty of time anyway until the spring.

i’m taking a class on it right now. the class is in a large cafeteria because it’s winter, but so far it feels pretty fun and addictive.

    fly fishing. 4 years ago

one of my good friends, Carey goes fly-fishing all the time. I’m not that much of an outdoorsy girl, let’s just say I’d prefer to be at Bergdorf Goodman’s rather than Mount Kathadin, but…I’ve been begging her to take me. Hopefully, before summer’s up…I’ll accomplish this goal. I love the water. I’ve been fishing back in the day with my grandpa…this has got to be done.
