I live in downtown Portland, and this is such a totally fantastic bookstore. There are both new and used books, all well organized, multi-floors, a coffee shop to go and read to see if you really want to buy something, helpful people working… and they will buy back used books, too. It’s an amazing place.

As a bookcrosser the temptation to buy books 3 years ago

is overwhelming, so many books, so little time

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. We’re in Vacouver on business and I went on Monday. Bought books. Drooled and walked around in glorious amazement. Am going back, today, minutes from now.

    ACCOMPLISHED.

Make sure to set aside most of a day if you're visiting Powell's. 3 years ago

There are trips to Portland and there are trips to Powell’s and never the twain shall meet. If you try to visit Powell’s “while you’re in Portland”, the Powell’s experience will, in its natural course, subsume the general Portland experience. Powell’s is just that awesome.

if i lived in portland i would go to powell’s at least once a week.
so perhaps it’s best and safest that i don’t ;)

I may get lucky here-- 3 years ago

Brett may be going to a manager’s conference in Vancouver (depends on whether he wins the permanent version of his current temporary promotion, but he’s pretty confident). If they haven’t reserved the entire place just for the conference, I’ll be going here with him—in Vancouver, just across the river from Portland.

What a store! 3 years ago

You must check this out… just be sure to leave yourself lots of time to get lost. :)

If heaven is a kind of library... 4 years ago

Holy cow. I’ve been using the good people at Powell’s for years (imagine, bookstore people who actually read books—don’t try this at Hastings!) They can find the most obscure volume based on practically no information of which half is wrong. I once asked (for a friend) if they’d ever heard of a book by an Asian author with some kind of bird in the title, maybe a swan. I got the author’s gender wrong and it wasn’t a swan either, but when I sent my friend the title they came up with (in less than 12 hours, natch) she was like, “THAT’S IT!” She’d been trying to find it for years. They had several used copies.

So now my NaNoWriMo character has flown to Portland to visit Powell’s, and in researching I found their vastly improved website (haven’t been there for years). Oh…wo…I have GOT to go to this store!
