It’s nice holding a freshly laid egg in the palm of one’s hand. (Provided there’s no chicken poo on it!) It’s fairly risky to remove eggs from under a broody hen, though.

Yep. Chicken coop, hens, a rooster…and now chicks. The 3 hens produced more eggs than we could comfortably eat, so I let the one of the gals sit on a clutch…and now we have 7 more chickens! They’re about half grown, and will probably begin laying eggs of their own in the spring. I don’t really know whether it’s “cost effective” but I know I feel a better environmental connection.
