Fate stepped in. 15 months ago

On the night of April 13 2008, my sister brought home a couple of freshly born, wet, squealing, umbilical cords-still-attached kittens that had been abandoned in a plastic bag in front of some shops near our home (some people… GRRR)! With the help of our mother, we nursed both of them and named them Happy and Heaven. Unfortunately, Happy died not long after he arrived, but Heaven is hale, hearty and still with us now. She’s well past the danger zone for kitties, and she’s now our very own little girl!

Can't wait! 18 months ago

This is something i’ve ALWAYS wanted to do. I’m only 18 now.. going to college in the fall, so i know it’ll be a good couple years before i’ll get this one done. (going to college to be a vet tech!!) It kills me so much to see animals needing homes or to be fostered, and i cant do a thing about it. I just look forward tothe day i have a place of my own, and ill finally be able to help.

Goodbye 2 years ago

I received an e-mail yesterday saying that a space has opened up for my foster kitties. I’m taking them back today after work. I was really excited at first, because now David will stop asking me when they’re going back and our house can be cleaned up now, but I’m a little sad too.

All my foster cats are very sweet, and I will miss them. I really think they have a better chance of being adopted now though, because people go through the big house all the time when they are looking for cats to adopt, whereas no one goes through my house looking for them.

There are a lot of really dedicated, sweet people that clean at the shelter too, so I know they’ll get lots of attention. I hope they all find forever homes soon.

Don't know how much longer I'll have them 2 years ago

I’ve had my foster cats for almost six months now. I had no idea what I was getting into, and now everything is crazy! The foster cats have made a HUGE mess of my guest bedroom, which I just try not to think about. Socks is very upset about them being here, so he poops on the floor in front of his litter box (which I hated, but at least it’s linoleum so it’s easy to clean up) but now he’s started peeing on the carpet at the front door. Both him and Fig walk around meowing constantly and pawing at the front door like they’re trying to say, help, get us out of here!

So, sadly I’ve contacted the head of the group I volunteer with and told her I can’t keep them anymore. I’m just so busy lately that I have no time to do more than feed, water, and clean their litter box. They really deserve more attention and someone who can take them to the adoption fairs so they have better chances of being adopted.

Overall, it was nice to have them, and I’m glad I was able to help, but I don’t think I’ll be doing this again until I have a bigger house or a basement or somewhere better to keep them and a little more time to spend with them.

Now I just have to wait for them to have space to take them.

My sister and I rescued 6 puppies and their mommy from a pound, in conjunction with Cuddly Canines. And it ended up being the most rewarding experience of my life!! They were border collie/lab mixes, and the smartest kids you have ever seen in your entire life. Not the mention the absolute cutest!! I now have an intense weakness for black/white dogs.

Another addition 2 years ago

Yesterday a co-worker called me at lunch and told me to come downstairs, because there was a tiny stray kitten and she didn’t know what to do about it. It was so pitiful and covered in fleas and dirty and it just hissed at me when I touched it.

I went back to my lab and waited for David to bring back our lunch. He called me to say that lunch was here, but he told me to come downstairs because there was a little kitten and he couldn’t catch it! I went down there, and we put it in his truck (with the windows down of course!) with a cup of water.

We called to get an appointment and then took it to the vet. They said he/she was anemic from all the fleas, but seemed to have a chance. The vet squirted some formula on the table and it just gobbled it up! They gave us some capstars (those things are amazing!) to kill the fleas and some ointment for its eyes (they were covered with gunk). We took it home and gave it a little home in the guest bathroom, where it sits on its little bed and purrs whenever someone comes near it.

We’ve been feeding it wet food, and it seems to have a good appetite. We have to keep it isolated from all the other cats for about a month until we can test it for leukemia, AIDS, etc.

Honestly, at this point I don’t know if we have a new foster kitten or a new cat! I think we’re going to name it Petri…in honor of being found in the parking deck of our work. We both work in a research lab so petri….petri dish….it seems to fit pretty cute!

Bye Pawly 2 years ago

Little Pawly was adopted this past weekend. He was a birthday gift for someone. Pawly was the polydactyl kitten with big cute mitten paws. I’m glad they’re getting adopted now, but I’ll miss them too.

Did you know? 2 years ago

You can also foster BUNNY RABBITS! ;)

Can't wait! 2 years ago

My husband and I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. I plan to begin fostering in a year, when we’ve purchased a house. In the meantime, I will register myself on Petfinder.com as willing to do other stuff to help out. I didn’t realize you could register as a volunteer on there, doing all sorts of things, including fostering.

ChiOmegaGirl is a mommy! She's finally here!

Hellllllo Luna! 2 years ago

We’re foster parents! We took little Luna home two days ago on Wednesday August 22nd. Tomorrow is her first “Dog Day Afternoon” at the humane society, so maybe that’ll be our last day with her = ) She’s a fabulous puppy who is actualyl about a year old, and we don’t have a clue as to what her breed is. I listed her as Peke-Terrier on PetFinder.com, but that’s a guess. She’s a little doll and we’ll miss her when she finds a good family, but she deserves a great home where she will be treasured forever!
