The aforementioned ljArchive program is windows-only. Turns out one you start looking there is an infinity of LiveJournal archiving programs.
After some Googling I found ljdump, which is Python-powered and therefore runs happily on my Mac. Its author is working on a program to publish the resulting heap of XML files, ljpublish.

I’m with the others in agreeing that ljArchive is a good program that saves both your entries and comments to them. It feels good to know that I now have a local copy of my blog for backup in the rare event that LJ should lose it.

used http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/, worked like a dream. Didn’t save my music or tags, but whatever.

Whilst I’m pretty sure that LJ have a really good quality backup process I feel a lot more comfortable having my own backups. I’m actually going to do a backup of all my important files onto a DVD this morning too!
