I bought my (sort of) first home one month ago. I owned homes with my ex-husband, but this is the first home I have bought and owned alone. Only my name is on the title and deed, and it feels good to have accomplished home ownership on my own. It is 93 years old and needed some TLC, but it will still have the old home charm when I’m done. Thankfully the previous owner installed a new furnace and all new duct work, hot water heater, plumbing, electrical, vinyl exterior siding and new windows, so there are just a few cosmetic things I want to do before moving in. I have begun remodeling, but there is still much to do.
Master bedroom:
- the closet is built and now needs a coat of paint, trim and door.
Bathroom:
- wall needs repaired where the old sink was removed (darn plaster walls!), a fresh coat of paint everywhere, and the new sink installed.
Kitchen:
- tear out old sink and cabinet on east wall and install new sink, garbage disposal, cabinets, counters, and dishwasher;
- scrub and clean everything;
- put a fresh coat of paint on everywhere.
Living room:
- sand the walls (already removed 8 layers of wallpaper and coated the walls with mud and patched areas where the plaster was rotten)
- repair the hole in the ceiling (this is where handy friends come in handy)
- put a coat of primer and paint on the walls.
Entryway:
- finish installing new door and window (needs refurbished first);
- put up drywall (tore down all the plaster in the entryway because it was covered in many layers of wallpaper and rotten in a lot of places), and then mud and sand;
- have custom molding made to match molding and trim in the rest of the house (most was ruined or rotted in the entryway) and install;
- primer and paint.
There is a lot of yard work that needs done, but I will need to put that on hold until winter is over.

katlur1951 is finding a new wireless keyboard and mouse
It’s hard to get the home improvement projects done when the piles of life refuse are sitting in stacks and piles in front of the areas you need to reconstruct. I am an unofficial charter member of the Never Throw Anything Away Because You Might Need It Later Society. People in the NTAABYMNILS have an issue with actually putting things into refuse bins for fear that the fickle finger of fate will suddenly blast from the ionosphere and zero in on one’s nose to point out, in case anyone had missed it, that it is a flagrant disregard of the potential facts to do such a thing, because…that is just the time when whatever you casually tossed away will be Just The Thing that will complete some deficient thing or situation, making your life move forward as it was meant to do instead of encouraging either entropy or pushing your luck. So…I got piles and stacks. This is not an episode on Dr. Phil wherein we see the OCD-appelated, pathetic individual cowering pathetically in the corner of a seat while being castigated by a self-righteous, semi-corpulent, balding man who seems to think he knows stuff, more stuff than you at least. I am not OCD, just prudent. Some of these things in the stacks and piles have actually cured a rainy day or two. So there.

We remodeled all three floors while living in it!
This has been a crazy three months but we ripped out old carpet, painted all walls and trim. Then we laid hardwood and new carpet. We painted our cabinets and got new countertops and appliances. We do have new chandeliers to put up but that can wait! It feels so good to be done!

I am tired of my fade colors and decorating so I chose a neutral backdrop- a nice taupe, to compliment any mood I am in! I am getting smarter!
