My girlfriend wants me to teach her my lectures too.

I’m teaching as an Adjunct Professor for the summer Anatomy and Physiology 2 lab. So far, some of my students seem really lazy. It’s a 4 credit course, jammed tight into a 2 month period, where they learn pretty much all of the hard stuff (Endocrine, Blood, Cardiovascular, Renal, Hepatic, Reproductive, Immune and more). The lab lectures are four hours, from 6 pm to ten pm, twice a week. In that time period, I often have to cover around 100 pages of important information.

Apparently, the girl who taught the night class last semester only lectured for a half an hour and let the students leave after an hour. Myself, I think this to be a travesty, being a very important class for most of them (doctor, PA, nurse, PT wannabes), but all they want is the credits for the class. One girl, who I’m sure will be getting low grades, routinely sighs and mutters during class because she really doesn’t want to be there.

A few of my other students really seem to enjoy themselves, but I can’t help but feel conflicted. This isn’t my first time teaching, it’s my third, but it’s my first time teaching so late at night.

I reviewed a lecture I write with my girlfriend over dinner and she said she thought I was talking down to her, which upset me quite a bit. After she apologized for an hour or so, I had to sit and think if I really was “talking down” and realized I might be.

Here’s to hoping this week will be better. I’m changing my method from doing mostly functions to doing a brief overview of functions and an in-depth look at pathology, which is way more interesting.

I love teaching. Truly and truly. Walking into a classroom for the first time, six years ago, I knew this is what I was meant to do with my life.

Currently, however, I’m teaching in an eighth grade alternative program where the majority of my students won’t graduate high school and don’t particularly care. My students, as individuals, I enjoy—but I don’t feel like I’m making any impact on their lives in any real way. It’s tough….
