Ok… so this has taken a little longer than expected, but 3 years on from my first 10k back in 2010 and, yesterday, I returned to Sheffield for the 2013 Great Yorkshire Run, finishing in a PB time of 48:42.
It’s a great feeling to have knocked off over 5 minutes my first 10k time! 14 months ago
Getting into running for the summer, and I recently finished the Bolder Boulder in 51:32. I’ll be doing around 7 more 10k’s this year, so I’ll probably be able to beat that time. All the 10k’s I’m registered for are with my dog who needs frequent water stops, though, so this may not be broken until next May when I do one by myself. 18 months ago
How I did it: I followed the 10k training plan in a book calld Run Less, Run Faster. 3 runs a week plus 2 sessions on the bike. Every run has a target time.
I ran a 10k in April and was on track for 50 mins at halfway but the second half was hard (lot of uphill) and I finished in 53 mins. I ran another on an easier course 2 weeks later and finished in 50:21. I didn't realise how close I was to 50 mins, but I don't think I;d have made it even if I had. I was all out.
I went back then and did a full 12 week cycle of the Run Less, Run Faster plan and then did a 10k in 49:12. Delighted with that. At halfway I was struggling and thought I'd be slower over the second half and miss my target but I kept it going and the nearer I got, the more I felt I would do it and the more I tried asa result. Great feeling at the end. 6 months of training paid off.
Next running goal is a marathon in 4 hours. Read how I did it… 3 years ago
