I was really hoping to see puffins in Pembrokeshire this weekend, but the only glimpse of them was on postcards, which doesn’t really count. I think I’d have to take a boat trip to Skomer to be guaranteed a sighting – it’s a pity that I get sick just looking at a boat, never mind getting on board one. The kids are maybe a bit too small for a full-on nature spotting boat trip as well – they might enjoy it, but I’m not willing to pay out for the tickets to wind up with me throwing up over the sides and the kids whining because they’re fed up and want to see sharks, whales and dinosaurs rather than a few measly seabirds. So, this one isn’t fulfilled yet. I’d better check out the seasickness tablets before I try again.
Having missed seeing puffins in Ireland and on the south coast, I finally got to see puffins at Bempton. The sand eels on which they feed are apparently becoming more scarce because of global warming so their range is moving north.
jenni is awesome.
we took a cruise in the gulf of alaska from seward. i saw puffins nesting on the chiswell islands. so amazing.
Elizabeth just blah...
I live in Maine. Puffins live on Egg Rock Island. They are beautiful and worth seeing. On the trip out, we also saw Harbor Porpoises, Seals and miscellaneous seabirds. Check out the Maine Audobon’s Society website for more information!
