"No words."
How I did it: I backpacked through Europe and spent about 8 days in Amsterdam. I fell in love with the city and its people almost immediately. It is certainly charming, but compared to other European cities it had few sights to offer. Think of Paris: the Louvre, the Tour Eiffel, the Champs- Élysées? What does Amsterdam have that compares?
The answer: a lot. Its people are warm, friendly, and tolerant. The architecture is gorgeous. The music scene is vibrant and lively. The city always has numerous unusual and quirky cultural events, especially in the summer and often for free. The Dutch lifestyle is certainly intoxicating.
Lessons & tips: Never. Ever. Ever pay anything without having first seen the apartment with your own eyes.
Get a cheap bike, which will end up being a much better investment than strippenkarten.
Learn some basic phrases in Dutch. Almost everyone speaks English, but they will really appreciate it when you can address, thank, greet, etc. them in their own tongue.
Resources: I posted ads to Craigslist and used various other room-finding websites, but in the end the only one that gave me any leads was http://www.clickflatshare.co.uk/Amsterdam/. It is very anti-scammer, so everything on the page is trustworthy.
