is trying to speed through my paper so I can get bak to reading a book
I had to take my sternum piercing out in November. It lasted me 9 months so I feel like I got a good chunk of time out of it before it rejected. Taking it out was quite depressing though. It had been growing out for like 2 weeks before I finally gave in and took it out. I miss it so much and constantly am running my ringers over where it used to be. I’m planning on getting it redone sometime within the next 2 weeks (I’ve given it almost a year to heal) so we’ll see how much it hurts the second time around—since they’ll be piercing scar tissue now.

I booked in with my regular piercer, she recently pierced her clavicle, so i know she’s confident with it, which makes me a bit more confindent in her. At first i was really iffy about who gave me a surface piercing due to all the risks, but after doing a bit of research, i think it’s time i finally did it.

Any surface piercing has the possibility of growning out. The sternum is a tricky place because it moves so much with your body so it has a high chance of growing out. Places such as the back of your neck or the clavical have lower rejection rates because they experience less movement. Surface piercings can reject at random times. There is no way to predict or stop it. Your body wants to reject the jewelry because it’s a foreign object, so if it decides it wants it out, the jewelry is going to start to grow out of your skin. The odds of your body allowing the jewelry to permanantly stay in your body, are very low so yes, more than likely it is temporary piercing. However, once it starts to grow out and your piercer removes the jewelry for it to heal up, you can later get it repierced. My piercer told me that the sternum generally lasts about 6 months, but it all depends on how your body responds to the piercing.
If you still are unsure about anything or don’t wanna trust what I have to say, your best bet is to visit a piercing parlor and get the facts from the piercer him/her-self. I’m just stating what my piercer told me and what I have learned in anatomy class. Hope it helps! =)

i want this, but what’s this i hear about it being temporary?
i looked it up on wikipedia and it said it can grow out. it also said that it can be prevented with correct jewlery and if the piercer knows the correct placement. anyone know the facts?

i went with a good friend of mine to get his clavicle pierced two days ago. i’ve never seen a surface piercing done before, so it was very interesting. i’ve yet to decide whether or not i want to go through with it for just a temporary product. i think i may wait until an important event in my life and get it for that… we’ll see.
<3!
p.s. my friend went to brian decker in brooklyn. his place looks uber sketchy on the outside, but very clean and professional on the inside. he even autoclaved everything right in front of us… which has never happened to me before.

I got it done yesterday on my 18th birthday and I am so happy with it. It looks so good and it’s just amazing. A bit painful (duh) but the pain is worth it. Just make sure you get someone really good to do it. Surface piercings are tricky and my piercer said the sternum WILL grow out eventually (probably after 6 months). So if you want a permanant piercing, don’t get it.

I loved having this piercing, but unfortunately I had to take it out for an operation. It’s fairly painful, as with all piercings, but looks amazing afterwards! Since it’s a surface piercing it may grow out after 3 months, but I had mine about 6 months and it was still fine.
